i don't know if it's the case with the 7D or not, but many of Canon's cameras only access the best AF mode with a lens of f/2.8 or faster.

It isn't more expensive, it's less expensive....But I understand wanting the L.... I don't understand how it would limit it's "usefulness" in the future if you're not planning on going full frame.
Just saying, for most folks, 38mm is too narrow for the wide end of a zoom.
All that said the 24-70 will have stellar IQ on any body.
Good luck.....

There is the rare chance that I would get a full frame well into the future. I guess that is not a huge deal, it is more that I like the idea of the much better quality of the lens :)

you have a "L" spell on you and in the end really your not gunna listen to advice that advises against L lenses.... your inclination will be to re-justify your love for L lenses and thats exactly what your looking for on here.... someone to confirm for you that you should infact just get the 24-70L or 24-105L. I know this because i have been down that road, lol. Bought a 17-40L on my crop camera and realized everyone was right that told me i should get the 17-55 f2.8.

I really dont know how else to put it.... but the best range for a crop body lens is 17-xx mm. And the best 17 - XX mm range lens is the Canon 17-55 F2.8 IS. Sure its expensive and sure its not an L lens and sure some people think its not worth the money. It still doesn't change that it is the single best crop lens in the "walk around range".

The above all av-course IMO before i get attacked. Just giving you a little insight into my past experience.

I know where you're coming from wanting an "L", I am much the same.

That said, JayStar gives very good advice. Well worth considering.

I know, I guess I am starting to come around on that point. I guess my options are 7D + 17-55 or see if I can fit in a 5Dii and 24-105.

The 5Dii with the 24-105mm comes to $3800AUD compared to the 7D with 17-55mm which is a much more reasonable $2900AUD...

I'll try and hold off for a bit and see if a full frame is worthwhile as I had not really considered it until very recently...

You sort of bring another element into the mix here... Those two bodies are fairly different. You should get the one that suits your style. 7D is a fast camera for sports, birds etc. 5DMkII is slower, but is all about image quality. (Fast/Slow as in Autofocus speed and fps).

IMHO, unless you're reguarly shooting fast moving subjects, the 5DMkII and 24-105 would be a much better set up and well worth the extra $1100.

What part of Australia are you from?

I am starting to lean more towards the 5Dii, I am still doing my reading into that but I assume the trend will be towards more and more full frame cameras as the sensors become more affordable?

I don't care about the fps, I do care about the 1080p video which I hear is good on the 7D and I hope is just as good on the 5D? How does the full frame vs cropped work out for the video? Does the 5D record video full frame also?

I think the 5D with the 24-105mm lens will give me quite a bit of versatility and I may not need any other lens for a very long time I imagine.

I don't know alot about video on 5D2 vs 7D. I've seen samples of 5D2 video and it's excellent. If your planning to or need to save for a few months first to get the 5D2, keep in mind the 5d Mk III is rumoured to be out late this year or early next year. With some luck it will have the IQ (or better) of the 5D2, combined with the AF capability of the 7D.

i suggest you get the 5d2 and 24-105L. If you get the 7d and 17-55 you wont be happy I dont think.... there will always be that "what if" doubt in your mind about not having gotten the 5d2 full frame camera and the L lens.
