Probably over budget but if you get them one at a time these three lenses will cover everything you could need. This is based on the bulk of your photos being done outdoors.

EF-S 10-22
EF 24-105L
EF 100-400L

Start with the 24-105L

6D | 7D | XSI | EF-S 10-22 | EF 50 1.4 | EF 24-105L | 100-400L │ EF-100mm Macro| MT-24EX │580 EXII | Black Rapid RS-5 | lots of Think Tank.

That would be nice but that's way over my budget. $2k is pretty much the limit for now. I only do this as a hobby so I don't want to go overboard.

Keep in mind, the body needs to be included in the budget.

For now, switch the 100-400L for the 50mm F1.8. Then add body and your set :)

Here's my suggestion :

Canon T2i - 850$
Canon 70-200 F4 - 500$
Canon 18-55 - 100$ (I only use it for wide shots.)
Canon 50mm F1.4 - 325$
Canon 430EX II Flash - 225$
--------------Total------------

2000$ :)

Does DPP solve the issues with barrel distortion? Personally the only lens I have in my kit that I like to some point is the 55-250mm IS, though I have used the 50mm the most

I find the 50D to be too big so I'd rather stay with the rebel series.

It is big, and heavier, I don't know whether I really should get a grip for it, because that would add too much weight

Bad enough it was heavy with the 400D

I got myself a second hand 50D, canon grip, 420 flash, couple batteries, and memory card for $800
second hand 17-40 f4 L -$550
A new 70-200 f4 L- $650

that puts me at exactly 2k.

That setup would be killer, or if you really want a nice wide angle setup. Get the T1i instead of the T2i and you can save another $150+. Spring for the 17-40 f/4 instead of the kit 18-55 IS and 70-200. If you decide you need a telephoto later on get the 55-250. My most used lens is the 50 f/1.4 btw :D

Canon T1i- $650
Canon 17-40 f/4- $750
Canon 50 f/1.4- $325
Canon 430 EX II- $225
---------------
Total- $1950

Is f/2.8 that important to you? Especially in a 70-200 - f/2.8 versions are quite a bit bulkier than f/4 or variable ones.

Your original idea looks good to me otherwise.

no.

Then why are you picking bodies that all have video?

I'd say get an xsi and some good L glass.

The T1i has a better sensor, higher MP, and better high ISO performance than the xsi... hands down.... why does it always come back to video?

What do you intend to shoot primarily? Sports /action, portraits, landscapes ? with a limited budget that's the first question you should answer and go from there ;)

I hear ya. I primarily take family photos but I like to take landscapes, sports (sometimes indoor) and portraits.

My 2 most used lenses were the 17-50 2.8 and the 85 1.8. I didn't like the way the 17-50 had trouble focusing in low light sometimes and was short on the long end as my walk around. I don't have any complaints about the 85 ,I simply loved that lens.

Ive had both, I'm saying if i had to choose, Id have stayed with my xsi + l glass above my t1i without l glass. 100%
MP? who cares, sensor? probably minor different, high iso.. a little difference but honestly not that impressed.

I'm just saying if you dont need the video the xsi does just fine with beter glass compared to the t1i with lower end glass.

I see what you're saying but $100 is not going to change much as far as the budget for lenses go.
