I have a Pelican roller that I will put the loaded pack into to get me there. Gear I am taking is 40D, 10-20, 17-55, and 70-200, plus misc stuff. Haven't decided about the tripod or not. Would appreciate suggestions on backpack plus any other item I should take.
Also will be in San Francisco, and Ca coast from Carmel to Big Sur.
Thanks, janie

Yes tripod for Yosemite. It's pretty much the only place I use mine. If you are going to try night photography, you need a full moon. Otherwise it's so dark you get nothing even after a 7 minute exposure.

As for a backpack, you don't already have one? Go to a camera store with your gear and see what fits all your stuff, and what is comfortable for you to carry. The last Lowepro bag I had rode up too high and couldn't adjust low enough to carry comfortably. This is what I have, it's huge, comfortable, tough and it's at least $100 less than a comparable name brand. http://www.calumetphoto.com/item/RM2184/ (external link)

I would also bring all your lenses, you never know what might come up. 70-200 w/ 2x TC was great when I came across 3 young bucks on my last trip.

Yes, I have a back pack, but I don't like it. I am only taking the lenses I mentioned because I don't want to have to carry so much. Do you have a recomendation for a travel pod? I will do as you suggest and take gear to store.
I am a late 50's lady and can get pretty tired carrying a load on my back, lol. Was just wondering what others liked.

Are you planning on living out of the pack while in Yosemite? Are you camping in the backcountry, or are you car camping? That makes a big difference. Do you want a pack that will carry all of your camera gear, plus clothing, tent, food, etc., or are you just looking for a pack to take on day hiking trips that needs to fit your camera gear, a jacket, water and lunch?

Are you staying low or climbing?

What's your 70-200? I can't see it in your equipment list.....

We will probably not climb much, as there will still be too much snow. We will probably do the hikes around the valley and hopefully Sentinel Dome if Glacier road is open.

Here is an affordable option that will hold all of your camera gear in the lower compartment, as well as a sweater, lunch, water, sunglasses, sunscreen, etc. in the upper compartment: http://www.adorama.com/KADR465.html (external link)

I use this one, which is essentially the same as the backpack above, except it also has a laptop pocket: http://www.adorama.com/KADR467.html (external link) It works great for day hikes.

if your laptop is up to 15.6" then the Kata 466i might be your best bet instead of the 467(i) (467 holds up to a 17" laptop). outside dimensions are small like the 465i but deeper for the laptop addition. also has a tripod strap and rings in front to hang your camera, if needed.

Good call. The 466i also has straps for carrying a tripod: http://www.adorama.com/KADR466IBK.html (external link)

EDIT: oops, I see you already mentioned the tripod straps.

I like the 466i and believe I will try it. I don't need the lap top pocket, but can use it for something else. will need the tripod straps.
Thanks so much for your recommendations.

how long are u staying in yosemite? i was also looking into getting a pack for my camera gear also but my trip was canceled. my 3day trip needed at least a 40-45l bag without even including my camera gear. the f-stop looks really nice but i feel like the internal camera block is taking up a lot of space. give some more info on what else you are bringing and how long u are staying there and how many bags u planning to bring with u. with that we can assess the situation better.

I want a bag to hold two bodies, an EX580 flash, 100-400L zoom, 24-105L zoom, Sigma 12-24 zoom, and probably Nifty 50. Plus accessories like spare batteries & memory cards, filters, corded remote, etc. I'd like to have the flexibility to have both bodies ready fitted with lenses. And I want the bag to be backpack style and not enormous. Any ideas? I already have two bags, but neither can take two bodies.
