I have a 70-200 IS 2.8 that I have only used maybe 4 or 5 times. I have not used it enough to know how to really use it properly. Anyways, I plan to use it at a my daughter's dance recital in a couple of days. The stage will be properly lit so I don't think lack of light will be a problem because the building was designed for this kind of stuff. My objective is to "freeze the action" so to speak to I will be shooting in RAW, wide open at 2.8 and iso will be adjusted accordingly to achieve at least 1/200 sec or faster on my 5D2. Should I even bother leaving the IS on? Does it take longer to focus with it on especially when using faster shutter speeds or will it be to my advantage to keep it off? I know I should have practiced more with this lens but I'm really busy and don't have too much spare time to do so. Its going to be a dress rehearsal so I have the freedom to walk around the place, they won't allow cameras at the real performance. Any pointers will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I'd leave it on if you're seated far away and have it zoomed in @ 200mm.

Trust me. You will be shooting at 2.8 to get the shutter speeds you need.
Leave the IS on. And put your ISO at about 1600. (there wont be much noise since you're using the beast known as 5D2)

It will take a little bit longer to focus, but thats just how low lighting is.

Just be friendly, when you show up introduce yourself. Explain your daughter is in the recital, and the other parents shouldnt mind you taking pictures.

have fun!

Thanks for the advice! Will keep the IS on. Iso 1600 will be the way I go for sure, thanks again.
