When two local musical societies - The Melodramatics (external link) and Limelight Productions (external link) - decided to co-operate to perform Rice / Webber's rarely-available Jesus Christ Superstar, I was very keen to take part. However, work commitments meant that I was unable to commit to the rehearsal schedule, and reluctantly had to pull out.

So imagine my surprise when a couple of months later, once work had settled down, it turned out that they were still needing a Roman guard. I delightedly rejoined and took that small role in the show.

This was an amateur production different from anything I had been in before. Directed by West End professionals, with a sparse set and superb lighting, the action flowed without pause. The scenes where Jesus was being abused by the crowd as he carried his cross to be crucified left the audience horrified about man's inhumanity to man, with no need of religious feelings to envisage the cruelty being shown.

It was undoubtedly the most harrowing show I have been in, or seen. In every rehearsal I attended, someone would be in tears... who it was varying from day to day.

Truly, an outstanding show that I will always be proud to have been a small part of.

The photos were taken by a friend, Martin Quinn, as I was on stage. If you look at the EXIF you'll see it was very dark!

I need to add one more.

On the Saturday matinee I was standing in the wings during Hosana and noticed that when Jesus stood in one particular place, the light coming in from the wings showed a great effect... I am sure that my grandmother has paintings that look very like this.

I only had my G10 with me, so when I took a photograph at the same time in the evening performance I wasn't convinced it was going to be worth it. Well, it could have been better if I had my SLR and a ladder, but I still think it was worth taking

with the exception of a few focus issues... some very cool images. Especially 2, 3, 4, and the very last one.

Very nice!

Thank you. I agree with you about the focus issues. The crucifixion ones, in particular, were pretty ropey but I thought the images were so powerful and I liked them so much that I thought I'd post them anyway :-)

Not bad, considering in that kind of lighting you almost have to have a 2.8 or better aperture to avoid focus issues. Great composition on 2, 4 and 6.
