Should I not be able to control a 430EX (not the II) model as well with a 580EX II as with a 580EX? I bought a "gently used, 100% functional" 580EX II on eBay (first mistake, I guess). I cannot get it to trigger my 430 as slave. I borrowed a 580EX (old style), and it has no problems. I've experimented with all the settings, channels match, 580 II is in Master, etc., etc., but no dice. So, just making sure that old 430 and new 580 models should play together nicely. Thanks.

I am sure that you have the flashes in line of sight of each other, I have no problem with that combo.

I think, 580 EXII must fire 430EX anyway. I did not read anything about such a disharmony between them.

The 580EX II should work just like the 580EX in master mode so if the 580EX is working fine as the master to the 430EX, the 580EX II should, too. If it's not and you are very sure that it's in master mode (setting the 580EX II to master is different from how the 580EX is set to master), then there's probably something the matter with the 580EX II.

Be sure the 430ex is blinking and in slave mode. Be sure they are set to the same channel. Be sure your 580exII is set to master...

I am interested in this thread because I started with a 430 EX (not II) and just bought a 580 EX II and am planning to commit the 430 to slave mode. It sounds like this combination should be a decent setup - please correct me if I am wrong.

By the way, I bought the 580 EX II brand new for $418, including shipping and no tax, from Dentral Digital (www.centraldigital.com (external link)). I was watching these units on eBay and may have even bid on the same one that Alan bought, but new for $418 seemed like a pretty decent deal. 1 year Canon USA warranty included.
