Out doing some shooting with my niece and nephew. I normally shoot in M. I would occasionally swing around and take a shot of them, playing around. They were in the shade, and whenever I tried to do any exposure adjustments the "moment" would be lost. Finally, I just said, "Screw it! Use the green box.". So I did... and they came out pretty good.

They were just snaps, for fun, and I'm ok with that. Of course I switched back to M for the serious stuff.

Guilty :(
I used the GB over the weekend at friend's kid birthday party as well. Too many lights, people, kids and I was the only shooter so I did not have much time to play with the setting and risking their only photo. Beside there was a poker table waiting for me :).

Isn't Av or Tv for situations where you have light differences? Heck, even throw the camera into auto ISO, but why the green box?!

EDIT: I am not sure if your bodies have auto iso.

In the currently active thread Av mode vs Manual, I admitted to using it occasionally, for exactly what you have described: when you do not have time to check and adjust your settings, or you will lose the shot.

From what I can tell, many folks here seem to forget green box is even there. And though I don't use it often, I keep the notion that it is the fastest way to get off a shot tucked away in the back of my mind.

I tried 430exII ceiling bounce, ISO500, F/2.8 and still didn't have enough speed. I was hoping to get no higher than ISO400, F/4 but it was no where near what I wanted. I will practice and figure this out for the next serious shooting. Otherwise, please advice. Sorry OP for TJ.

I'm glad to see this thread. I have lost so many photo moments because I'm trying to be "good" and shoot in Manual instead of taking the easy way out. I have to actually "think" about what adjustments to make when a photo doesn't come out right, and usually by then, the moment is gone.

You know you don't need to use auto...just use P, Av, or Tv and Evaluative metering.

Yeah, I'd use P before I'd use the green box.

Either way, did you rush home and take a shower afterwards?

;-)a

That is still 2 settings and requires looking at your settings window.. like using auto ISO. With Green box, when you are really in a hurry, it is just a turn of the dial and shoot.

I AM NOT ADVOCATING GREENBOX, but nothing else is this fast when your know your current setting are wrong.

If given the choice of missing the shot or green box.. twist and shoot.

Yeah, but P is everything that Green Box is with the added bonus that you can override anything you wish. With Green Box, you're completely stuck with what the camera gives you.
