Pepole , i am planning to buy Canon EOS 50D Kit with EF 28-135mm IS Lens in next 3 month or so.
This will be my first ever DSLR , I will not able to buy any additional lens with it due to my budget.
i am looking all purpose lens, Do you guys think EF 28-135mm IS is good all purpose lens?

OR

i can just buy a 50 D body and spend around $400 on lens, what will be your lens suggestion?

The 28-135mm Is is a good walk/Standard lens, IMO :-)

Just wondering why the 50d? Why not get something 300-400$ cheaper and put the money you saved towards a lens?

maybe, depends on the "all purpose"! EF-S type lens like the 18-55IS and 55-250IS are significantly sharper on crop models (like the 50D). www.photozone.de (external link)

I want to make sure that i have the affordable non-plastic body , i personally do not like plastic bodies (no-pun intended) :) , 50D fits the bill :)

I would say the 28 is too wide on a 50D. Like the previous poster said you will find a lens designed for your crop sensor would be better. The Tamron 17-55 2.8 would be a great lens for you if you can afford it.

1. Canon 17-55 f/2.8
2. Tamron 17-50 f/2.8

I don't think there's a Tamron 17-55 f/2.8 ;)

You say that the 28mm is too wide for the 50D, yet you suggest a 17mm, am I the only one confused here?

You will not regret it. I had the Canon 500D for a few months and upgraded to the 50D and I am very happy that I did.

You might consider a 40d for around $600 and then use the leftover money to purchase the Tamron or Canon models mentioned. While I really like the 28-135 as a walkaround, the 28 is limiting. However, it won't be that bad.

i recently bought a 50d myself, had the kit but took it back and got just the body instead, along with a 24-105L. I love the L!!! This is a fantastic super sharp lens (BTW so glad 50d has micro adjust) through the whole range and very well made. I can pass the advice given to me - buy a good body (50d) and pair it with an excellent lens...this is absolutely great advice.

If you can manage the above combo, you will not be disappointed so stretch your budget. In addition, it is the lens NOT the body, that will preserve its value in the future. Get Good Glass!!!

for the range, I'd love the 17-85mm IS USM. Wide enough for the indoors, say Cheese shots. and long enough for that close up shot.
