Lens hood question

I'm a newbie so please bare with me and my questions.

Situation...camera is shut off. Switch is set to AF. I go to put on the lens hood and the manual focus ring turns while putting on the hood. Is this doing any damage to the AF motor even though the camera is off? I know not to turn the manual focus ring if the camera is on and AF on.

Depends on the lens - which lens is it? Does it feature full-time manual focus?

If it's a lens like the 50mm f/1.8 then yes, you can damage the AF by turning the focus ring manually while it's in AF mode even with the camera off, as far as I'm aware. I have spoken to a photographer who claimed they had damaged their nifty fifty in that way. If you put it into MF mode you will not damage it.

I have owned one of those lenses and occasionally accidentally turned the focus ring in AF mode - I spent a couple of years using it with no damage. I think it's much more likely to damage the motor if you try and turn it while the camera is attempting to AF.
