Hey Guys!

Just have a quick question.. I am upgrading several of my lens and am looking at moving up to a 24-70 F2.8L... I shoot on a 50d body for now but could see myself going full frame in a year or so (thats why im not looking at the 17-55).. What do you guys think of this lens? I just bought a 70-200 2.8L (non IS) and am looking to get something to compliment that... Im not worried about not having IS, but I really like having a fast lens.... :) I shoot mainly weddings and portraits...

Just let me know what you guys think... Im sure anything will be an upgrade from the 28-135 that I am used to... :)

Thanks so much!
Jason

Well, if you are thinking of going full frame in the future, shoot weddings and like fast zooms, then the obvious choice is the 24-70. It's a great lens. Unless you are interested in saving money on a third party lens, it is pretty much the only choice.

I love my 24-70, it basically never leaves my camera. It is a bit on the heavy side but speed sharpness and zoom range are great. Plus it works great on crop and FF cameras. I use it on an XSi. Plus its a good mate for your 70-200. I've used mine for everything from shooting photos of my kids at the park to concert photos in a poorly lit club.

Might want to wait for a couple of months when the IS version is announced.

Funny, I had a dream about this lens last night. If you are getting good shots on your 70-200 without IS, then I guess you won't need it. Personally, IS is on all of my lenses...all 2 of them lol. I say if you can budget it, go for it!

If youre planning on going full frame, you cant possibly go wrong with the 24-70L!

As you said yourself you'll be looking after a FF in a little while, you might also want to consider the 17-40 which is average wide on a crops and really wide on a FF, unless you need the length and the speed ofcourse!

Like I've said before - rent one to see how you like it. Since you're thinking of going full-frame, you're really buying two lenses. The 24-70 on a crop isn't going to be the same on a FF body, and you might not like the range when you switch. To get a feel about what it will be like on the FF side, you can rent a FF body for a while to test with the rented 24-70, or rent a 17-40 and try it on your crop body (17-40 gives about the same focal length range on a crop as 24-70 will have on a FF).

I bought the 24-70 about a month ago, and I love it. I decided not to wait for IS because the "24-70 'IS' is right around the corner!" rumor has been brewing forever.

I would recommend going to a camera store and trying out the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 HSM (NOT the macro version, the HSM version!) with the Canon 24-70 f2.8 L. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

But Sigma is not that much cheaper than Canon. It's lighter though, but doesn't have the Canon's build quality...weather sealing.... Although it compares quite well in terms of sharpness (after you get it back from recalibration)

The two lens that I use the most are the 24-70 and 85L. I mainly shoot portraits.

The 24-70 is really sharp, you won't regret it!

I guess if $500 isn't much cheaper, then I am not sure what is gonna satisfy you, any cheaper and I'd honestly worry.

I am not a good assessor of "build quality" seeing how I am very happy with my Sigma lenses. As for weather sealing, yes, it lacks it, but unless the OP plans tog et a 1D or 1Ds series body, the weather sealing is kind of a worthless feature. Plus, a plastic bag works just as well as weather sealing if not better.

As for calibration, the lens I tested in the store was spot on. Your experiences may differ, but of my 4 Sigma lenses, only one needed calibration and thats the infamous 50 1.4.
