Hi guys, this was my first try at panning. Canon 50D + Sigma 70-200mm.

CC is more than welcome, still have a lot to learn and any advice or comments will be appreciated.

We found a curve and this is the result:

The subject (the bike) is not sharp enough IMO. Panning take a lot of practice. What shutter speed were you using?

To pan the subject has to be either passing along a straight line in front of you, or if you are on the inside arc of a curve. That way the camera motion can follow and keep the subject in same spot long enough to produce a sharp image while the background blurs.

In these you dont have that parallel motion so its impossible to be sharp.

Hi Gonzogolf, the first one I think is the most parallel I was when I shot it, but he was coming out of the curve, maybe not enough time to focus and follow the movement ?

Maybe. But you'd have to be pretty good at panning. I suggest playing around with different speeds and using AI Servo focus mode, with a single focus point (preferably the center point) and focusing on the rider's helmet. Use an Aperture f/11-16 to provide you with enough DoF.

Learning a lot here. I'd say they're still decent shots for your first time.
