Does anyone use Cokin Filters anymore? I have a set of them I used to use on my Canon EF (circa '73). It's easy to use them on new DLRS, but with all of the image editing software now available (GIMP, PhotoShop, etc.), it seems kind of superfluous unless you are trying to maintain an artform (like stained glass)...

Hi Jim. I am new to photography and I use them (Cokin P series). In fact I pay good money (proportionally... I am poor :p) for them.

You are right about you can do pretty much anything on a digital image with photoshop. But isn't it better if you can "pre-do" something before the image even hits the computer? (So less works on post-production)

Of course, one would argue if you used a filter there's no turning back even in Photoshop.

But I could think of 1 comon example the cokin system is extremely useful. i.e. Land/Seascape photos with sunrise/set.

Most of these filter can indeed be considered superfluous, but there are a few exceptions such as ND's, GND's and polarizers (including the B/Y one).

Cokin, no. The main filters needed for digital photography are circular polarizers, neutral density filters and graduated ND filters, and Cokin's "grey" filters aren't all that neutral.

They're not all that bad either.

Hey Jim,

I use the Cokin filters. Bought mine in the mid 80's. I have yet to master the software end of of the deal, so I use the filters for effect and the PP software for blemishes, and sharpening. I have a bout 9 filters, but the only ones that get used are the ND and Grad ND.

Yep, I am that guy that spends a long time before I snap the shutter. So I fidget with the setting on the camera and if using filters, slide them up and down many time before the launch button get the go. It's a hard habit to break, but my $300 laptop barf's when I try to do much PP work.

Many people (including myself) consider that to be a commendable attitude.
