In shots 1 & 3 what did you use for flash and where exactly was it? Reason I ask is that appears to be straight in line with camera and produced a very 'centered' look of direct flash. It actually is a little more centered than I really wanted, I'd have preferred a bit of side shadowing for definition. I opted for the "safer" option as I was losing light and I only had one chance to get these as Jordan lives over an hour away and we had postponed it twice. The flash is on a stand between she and I about 3 feet off the ground, and just out of frame camera left.

Part of it might be the oily skin of a teenager, or she might have a nice tan and the flash is washing it out, but the skin tone is pretty uneven. Move your light off to the side more and have her turn her head & shoulders toward the light (in the 45 degree range), then move her eyes back toward you (like she has on #2). The angled shoulder will keep her from having the "linebacker" look with the squared shoulders. It also changes the angle/shape of her head to the cam which will give her face a more pleasing shape. You should have her look through a posing book, even if its just pics cut out of the Nordstrom catalogue or Glamour magazine. This gives them an idea of how they might want to look or what poses they want to recreate. The smile is another big one. For her, like most teenagers, they are all the same. I typically have a discussion with them ahead of time about the "cheese" smile versus the kind of laughing smile which looks more fun & natural. When I see the cheese smile, I'll comment and they get it. Hope this helps! She isnt a model, these were senior photos so there was a limit to the amount of work I could do on makeup and posing. This is her authentic smile, I tried to get some variation in her smile but that was it. This is only a quick sample of the shots, its ironic that you comment on the linebacker look as these are probably the only 2 out of 150 or so where she is actually square to the camera.

Thanks for the info GGolf. Appreciate hearing about the lighting setup. Canon 5D2 > 35L-85L-135L

Also, from yesterday's golf league round: 2 birdies, 2 triples ... in the SAME round! dave I'm in two leagues. I was 3 over on Thursday, 16 over on Monday. Its like flipping a freaking coin whether I have any game on a particular day.

That way the leg/knee color doesn't blend in as much with the hay and would stand out on the green background, but that's just a preference. Others may like it where it's at. I'm horrible about that but still only seem to catch it most of the time in post. I couldnt move the bales, they were wet and the ropes were wrecked. The porch is on an old farmhouse thats on public property so I couldnt change the setup unfortunately. These were quickie edit proofs, I need to fix the skin tones where they are more consistent. I agree with the locked out elbow, she kept doing it a lot.

I agree with comments regarding lighting and the direct camera angle. Image #2 is my favorite. I think this is a terrific shot inspite of the hay bails. I suspect she is a country gal. If so, she will love this image the best. My Gear: 7d, XTi, 17-55f2.8 EF-S, 70-200f4L, 28-135 Kit lens, 2-580EXii
