Our old camcorder broke. I want to get my wife a very simple camcorder to use at home to film the kids. Would like one that is somewhat good in low light. Now i know i am asking alot. Would like one with out tapes if possible. Looking 300 dollars or less. I know i am not going to get anything great. What is a good name now a days? Thanks for any advice.

Why not sell your XTi and buy a t1i or t2i? You'll have better low light than many cameras, and will likely only cost you $300 (if you sell xti+grip)

The OP is looking for a very simple camcorder. I doubt she will appreciate any DSLR for home video.

Most good low light performers (not nearly as good as 5D II, etc) will cost more than $300.

For less than 300 bucks, your going to be hard pressed to find anything that will do good in low light.

And again, for 300 bucks, go to best buy, close your eyes and pick one that just "feels" right...they're all more or less pretty equal in that price range.

My neighbor just picked up a 279 dollar Sony from Best Buy a few weeks ago...and it takes damn good video for what it is....much better than what we had even just a few years ago.

Nobody cares about your gear list...
