I had some strange autofocus point activity last evening while shooting a softball game. I have C.Fn III-12 (Orientation Linked AF Point) set to 1 so that I can automatically switch focus points when switching the camera from landscape to portrait orientation when shooting.
I was shooting in landscape orientation and had the second-from-top-center focusing point chosen (I am using a single focus point with AF point expansion enabled and AI servo with * button focusing). When I switched the camera to portrait orientation, the focus point shifted, but it shifted to one of the bottom-left points (don't recall exactly which one) when I had previously set the second-from-top-center point for that orientation. I had several other instances of seemingly random focus point movement when changing orientations as well. I'm not quite ready to blame the camera as since I am using the * button to focus I could have inadvertently hit the AF point selection button. However, I don't believe this to be the case since I would have to then rotate either the main dial or quick dial and I did not do that.
I do know that when changing the camera orientation sometimes the focus point will not shift until I hit the focus button (*). I also have had some instances where it seemed the internal sensor did not detect the orientation change of the camera and I had to rotate it once or twice in order for it to detect the change in orientation and then move the focus point accordingly.
Has anyone else experienced this issue?
