I am negotiating a trade that would let me upgrade to a 5D. I plan on trading some lenses, so I will have wide angle(17-40L) and primes(Canon 85 & 1.8 Sigmalux ) covered, but I still will need a recommendation for a good medium zoom walkaround. The 24-70L is too expensive right now, so I am considering the following:

28-135 IS USM
Sigma 24-70
28-105
Tamron 28-75

I am thinking that the primes will keep me covered for low light so the 28-135 might be a good choice for the good range.

Any advice is appreciated.

I have the Tamron 28 to 75 and the Sigma 24 to 70. Both are very nice lenses. My go to lens is the Sigma but I have it on a crop body.

I had the 28 to 135 IS USM. As much as I wanted to like the lens, the IQ was not there.
I also had the 28 to 105. It was a nice and small lens.

All that said..I would suggest the Tamron 20 to 75 for the extra bit of range and lightness. The Sigma is PRETTY hefty..

my vote is for Tammy 28-75 for its excellent sharpness and contrast at all length.
28-135 IS not bad either, but it is slow and the sharpness at wide and tele end wasn't quiet good.
I never used sigma or 28-105 so I have no comment on those.

Depends on how you like to shoot. When I was shooting 35mm film I carried a 75-150/4 as my walkaround and had a fast 50mm in the bag for low light or wide angle shots. If I were shooting full frame today the 70-200/4 IS would be on the camera all the time.

I didn't realize there was the SIgma 24-60

Now I am thinking either:
24-60 AND 28-135
OR
24-105 IS

The 24-105 is a great lens, it's nice to have the extra 4mm on the wide end over the 28-135. I have no experience with any of the Tamrons/Sigma's, but I used to have the 28-135mm and was not pleased (on crop!) It's not particularly sharp, suffers from annoying lens creep, and is overpriced for what it is. I'd suggest the 24-105 or sigma 24-60 + any of the following: 85mm 1.8, 100mm 2.0, 100mm macro

24-105 is the norm for walkaround.

the 28-135's sharpness is Meh compared to the 24-105.

24-105L IS USM, no question, 24 is quite wide on a FF and 105 is good telephoto all in one lens, 4 isn't terribly quick but with the IS in most situations it'll be great!

Look at the 24-85 USM for a cheap and effective solution.

The 24-70L is too expensive right now

I have a feeling that if the 24-70 is expensive to the OP, then the 24-105 is as well. But everyone is still recommending it....

Better to procure used goods of repute,as opposed to a NIB POS.

I figure I'm gonna scratch things up anyhow...........
