i had the opportunity to shoot my roommate's girlfriend for some head shots for her portfolio. It was my first time doing something like this on my own. i guess she made it easy for me with her acting skills and outgoing personality. this was definitely my most fun photoshoot for anyone.

equipment used was:

1dm2n
50 1.4
85 1.8
580ex - used on the 3rd pic

let me know how they look. C&C please!

I like #3 too, although I might crop out the wall or whatever is on the far right of the frame.

I like all of these shots. Especially no 2 and 3. I like them alot. They are great shots. No 2 could be an add for glasses :)...

In no 1 and 4 i would have like to have more sharpnes in her eyes. You have strong light from behind. I like the shining in her hair, but to get the face looking great then is difficult.

I would have liked to see more structure in her hair also. But to get more structure in dark hair is not easy, especially with the high dynamic range in these direct sunlight shots. Flash and/or reflector is a must in these cind of shots.

Thanks so much! I had used off camera flash and had her boyfriend held it close to her and the flash did nothing. I even went up to full power and it didnt get and fill. Maybe he didnt point it right.

I also would like to see a warmer WB. Nice work with the DOF. Maybe a little sharp focus on the eyes. A few shot have more focus on the lips, although this might be intentional.

Overall, nice work.

actually all focuses were on the eyes..unless my lens is front focusing by that much, then i have a problem. i will post some warmer WB when i get home.

edit: in all 4 pics, focus were on her left eye

these are great. for headshots, typically tighter crops and non-distracting backgrounds are what captures the eyes of the "client" they're sending these into, so I would shy away from backlit backgrounds b/c it tends to take the attention off of the subject, this beautiful model.

You did a great job! for me, #1 and #4 are great headshots. The industry used to use mainly portrait oriented, but they're beginning to accept a lot of landscape oriented environmental portraits as well. the landscape portraits you have posted are great, I would just make them tighter cropped to show off that beautiful face.

great work!

so by cutting off the tip of her head, is that a big no no for headshots?

btw, thanks for your advice and compliment!!
