So, last weekend a friend of mine and I got our tailwheel endorsements and today we exercised that privilege in this beautiful 1943 Boeing Model 75, also known as the PT-17 Stearman. We also flew a 1946 Piper J3 Cub but I neglected to photograph that bird (next time!). This aircraft is located at Red Stewart Airfield, Waynesville, OH.

The first pic is with me at the controls of the aircraft (Dan on camera) and the rest are with my buddy Dan flying (me on the camera).

Very Nice! What's the going rate for a Stearman these days?

That's pretty reasonable when you consider there are non-glass 172SPs around Phoenix going for $120/hr wet. The Cub rate's a steal!

the Cub looks like he's about to do some waterskiing, or is it just a nice low pass?

Stick back on the ground!!!! LOL. Congratulations. Taking the step to tailwheels is the a big deal and will change your flying mentality and skills forever. Even when you get back in a nosewheel, you'll fly it better. Congrats again! Enjoy the Stearman!

Ryan, you got that right. I felt like a complete retard trying to nail wheel landings last week in the cub but was well rewarded the other day when I nailed a few. Flying a taildragger is very rewarding and it is great to get back to the essence of just flying stick and rudder. Of course, I am just hours away from my instrument rating and now its hard to concentrate on flying by instruments.

I know your pain. Learning to fly in a Cub and then adding 350+ Stearman hours is making my instrument rating that much more foreign and miserable! I keep telling myself though that it will make me a better, safer pilot. But man, I really don’t like it! Not enough wind in the face, acro and touch-and-go’s for me. LOL. We’ll get through it though right? ;)

Wonderful series! I love the second shot, it's just too bad the background is cluttered with the fuel farm.

You're very lucky - I'd jump at the chance for a flight in a Stearman. It's one beautiful classic aircraft.

Pennington, they say it only takes 2 things to fly, airspeed and money...

yeah Ryan. been studying my butt off for the written. If all goes well i will take that wed of this coming week and the its check ride time early the week after. then I can forget about all that crap and concentrate on my new passion...tailwheel and aerobatics. I didnt mention earlier that I got my tailwheel endorsement from Greg Koontz, i spent 5 days at his place doing aerobatics in his super decathlon and working on the tw endorsement at the same time...what an awesome time that was.
