I am thinking of getting this (external link) express card for my Dell XPS 1340 to read CF cards (external link).

First, I am trying to make sure that it will fit in my laptop, will it?
Does anyone have experience with these express cards? would you recommend these?
Do they support UDMA?

Google: DELL XPS 1340 EXPRESSCARD
4th link: Dell XPS 1340 setup guide.
pg 50: cards supported: expresscard/34, expresscard/54

your link: amazon.com, generic expresscard reader
same page, technical details: supports UDMA mode 0-6.

I have no experience with this reader. But, maybe next time you'd like to do your own research. It took me <5 minutes.

yeah i've seen that. for the dimensions of the card I found 54 mm x 75 mm x 5 mm. I assume that expresscard/54 applies to the width. was wondering if depth is standard.
and you got me with the UDMA.

Hoping there is someone with experience;)

Expresscard explaination. (external link) I'm certain the 1 bad review of the product was from someone with an older apple laptop with a PC Card slot, which is why it was too deep for the reader. Apples only ever came with the smaller 34mm expresscard slot.

It's a very generic card (no brand name, not even an unknown) and photographers can be very brand conscious. It may be difficult finding reviews.

Sandisk did/does produce an expresscard CF reader. IT takes a little digging to find. Here's a link. (external link)

thanks once again! i've seen the sandisk reader. what i liked about the the other one aside from the price was the form factor. it basically fully submerges into the slot. i guess with the SanDisk one you can just take it out if it bothers you that it is sticking out. hmm...

Interesting. I looked this up on amazon.uk (external link) and, apart from being twice the price, it's a lot slower. Or, rather, the claimed speed is much lower. Here's a quote from the UK site - "Transfer files up to 33MB/sec". Now that's slow - about the same speed as a non-UDMA USB reader, slower than Lexar's UDMA USB reader and a lot (4x) slower than Lexar's expresscard reader.

I've got the Lexar expresscard reader and that is properly fast - around 70 MB/s for my Sandisk 60 MB/s 32 GB card.

I have the card you linked to in the first post (two of them in fact) and I've had them for well over 2 years. One is in my Dell XPS M1710, where it fits perfectly flush, and the other is in my 12" Philips (Twinhead H12Y clone) travel laptop. In that laptop the prongs stick out a few mm - maybe 5mm or so.

Mine cost £6 each, including delivery, from a trader on eBay called Gigacity.

In fact, I posted about it here in 2007 - https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=376058

I've got a lexar exp card 34 on order, just wondering if it sticks out a lot, as they say it is deep so the cf card sits securly in it, either way its coming and looking forward to it, so just wondering ? (I have a fw reader, but needed a 4 to 9 pin lead for laptop use and the exp card reader wasnt a lot more than a good quality short lead :) )

After extended nightmares with EC aircards I washed my hands of the interface and suggest a FireWire reader instead. Read galbraith's pages on various readers and cards:
