I have a friend that is interested in stock photography and Macro work. I was trying to think of a really good all around camera to get him into photography. He said that if possible he wants to buy new so that the camera that is purchased isnt someone else s problems that he is taking on.
I am leaning towards telling him to get a Canon Pro 1, Why? Because I think it is better to buy an older high end camera that a low end new one.
Please keep in mind with your recommendations that stock photography requires very clean images. Budget is 500 MAX.

Thanks, Guys and Gals

I think you mean one of the 1D Series. I would agree that this is the way to go, although the 5D2 and 7D will also be suitable

Stock photography libraries have minimum requirements before accepting images. Pixel size is one. I think you would find that the current requirements dictate that the camera is producing 10megapixel images and I wouldn't be surprised to hear that 20 + megapixels are expected. Stock images also need to be very clean and show minimal aberrations introduced by poor post exposure processing. Over-sharpening is not acceptible.

So yes, suggest a 1DsMKII plus a good lens, plus a lot of controllable lighting, and somewhere convenient to shoot.

EDIT: $500 no way!!!
Possibly an old 1Ds but you better check to see if it's files are still acceptible to the stock photography agencies. It's a great camera for personal work.

Thanks for the reply,
Let me clear it up a little bit. Yes with a budget of 500 he will be limited to a point and shoot if he wants versatility

HERE is the Canon Pro 1 (external link)

The Canon 1Ds still goes for about 900-1100 if I am right and the 1D classic is getting near 500 but that leaves no room for glass.
My point and shoot is a G10 and to be honest I think it is a great camera. I was just wanting some more inside opinions before I recommended anything to him.
Thereason I was leaning towards a pro1 for him is because it would still leave enough room in the budget for a 430ex and since it has a hot shoe it could use one.

The stock site he mentioned required 4 MP files minimum with no up resing
