Two adults spooning for food

IMAGE: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4064/4583294984_bd10099d63_o.jpg

This guy on the perch is banded above the left knee. His leg above the band appears reduced in diameter, which is sad if it is that way because of the banding.

And a young bird coming in for a landing.

Great job on these Scott and I especially like the first one. There does seem to be a difference in the upper legs on that second shot but hopefully it's just the angle. Did you notice it in any other shots and did that leg seem lame at all?

Great series Scott! Never seen pictures of them with that color on the head that I can recall. Is that a breeding thing?

Thanks Mike....no he didnt appear lame, and its definitely a band that is just above the knee.

Thanks Jason...as they age they loose their head feathers which is what you are seeing in the first two shots. They have a head like a stork as adults (well not that bad :))

Thanks Sharon....I would assume they get up into Alabama but I'll have to check to confirm.

Wow, these are great shots. Do they make any noise with that beak? I'm not much of a fan of banding. Don't see any useful purpose to it.

Love these birds, Scott, and you did a great job with them. Were these at Merritt Island? There always seems to be plenty of them when I visit. Recently saw 22 of them in a cluster.

It is the angle that makes the left leg look skinny. Most bird legs aren't round. Many wading birds are banded above the "knee" so the band can be seen when the bird is standing in water.

Thanks Stan & yes the first shot was taken along the north part of Bio Mass road, looking out into the Atlantic. I was going to go down to the edge of the water for a better angle but there were lots of gators :)

Thanks Jim for the explanation, much appreciated.

Always lots of gators in there. I figure we see 1% of them, at most.
