anybody could give me a good explanation as to what happened?

This was taken today at 11.45AM (30minutes ago) of a Halo ring around the sun...

This is the 1st time ever that I have seen this phenomenon..

you can clearly see where the lens flare is and where the halo is... I took this with an ND8 attached to my lens

Are you asking about the lens flare, or the sun halo?

of course the sun halo... the lens flare is normal since I am shooting directly at the sun :)

Sundogs are the bright spots that appear across from each other, and often known as false suns (parhelia I think)

This is simply an ice halo which sometimes can HAVE sundogs along the ring. This time - apparently not. It is caused (like a rainbow) by sun passing through water. Only this time, it's frozen water in cirrus clouds high in the atmosphere.

It's a really nice shot of the halo. I've found it to be uncommon to find a complete halo

ahhh good... thank you

I just wish I have an UWA lens... I just sat on the concrete street floor and bent backwards to fit the halo :)
