I'd like to find out how to release the shutter while the camera is on the tripod. Is there a way without touching the camera's shutter release button to do so ?
I'm planning to shoot some landscape photos with my 7D late at night, and was wondering if there's a remote control or something that can be connected to avoid shaking the camera?
Also, if there is, is there a 3rd party replacement that would save $$ as I'm on the budget?

Take your pick. The 7D takes an N3 connector; the terminal is under the rubber flap on the left hand side of the body.

it's a remote shutter release. there are a ton of them on the market. if most of your pictures are doen on a tripod, I would spend good money on one. if you want one to have for the occasional session where you need a release, go to B&H and get this one...

I have it and like it. I put it through about 600 pictures. None failed to trigger. It has a bulb mode.

If you only need exposures 30 sec or less, you can set the camera's self timer for a 2sec delay. This way the camera stops shaking by the time the shutter opens. Otherwise, cable release like the others have said.

i used to be in this camp as well. some people will say 2 seconds isn't long enough for the camera to stop shaking. for me, i was just impatient. i didn't want to wait the 2 seconds when i was shooting 100 pictures. for $8 it was worth it.

Couple that with MLU. MLU and timer is a very cheap way to get delayed shutter for exposures up to 30 sec.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Thanks! I'm going to go ahead and order the Zeikos ZE-80 (amazon price is only $9 w/free shipping through prime). Is there any difference between this one and wireless models? Any reviews on the wireless shutter releases?

I found this one - Canon RC-6, but not sure if there are additional accessories needed for it.

The Phottix ones see to be respected for what they cost. My Phottix WXD-188 works for me. Only glitch is that the remote setting for taking 5 shots at 1 second intervals isn't always reliable for me. The seller says that the camera probably isn't autofocusing quickly enough. A solution is to just put the camera in burst mode and use the bulb setting on the remote to snap bursts of desired length.

It's annoying that Canon limits built-in timer usage to 2 or 10 seconds. The Nikons I've seen have more choices and/or a custom delay.

Radio remotes can have an advantage over Canon-style optical ones: you don't need line of sight to the sensor on the front of the body, so you can be anywhere and don't have to worry about the lens shadowing the sensor.

Doesn't sound like it is ideal for your budget but I find Pocket Wizards are great for this. The range you can release it from is amazing.

Plus if you already have MAX's all you need is the cable.

The main issue with the RC-6 is that it is an infrared controller and will work only from in front of the camera when inline with the infrared port near the camera grip

yup, this is true--front side LOS only. Though in most cases, I dunno if that's too big a deal as you can still avoid touching the device and getting in the shot.

You can definitely use an RC-1 as well. someone said you can also use it to start/stop video with the 2sec option as well (i have to go home and confirm this).

If you can read this, you don't need a macro | 7D + 5DIII + Waaaay too much spent....
