Hello
I have a 70-200 F4L non IS and I recently bought a tripod at a garage sale for 5 dollars, it is great but going vertical is a bit tricky. Today I was looking at a Canon tripod collar and I was shocked at the price, there are a few 3rd party ones on Amazon are they are a lot cheaper. Are they good and can I trust it?

Thank You
Michael D.

The aftermarket ones are fine. I used one off of ebay on a 70-200 f/4 with no problems. Not quite as nice as the canon, in terms of feel, but for 1/10 of the price, can't complain. Has felt lined inside for easy rotation and to keep your lens from being scratched.

I have one on my 70 to 200 F4..No issues at all. I leave it on the lens all of the time. Third party makes sense to me..especially for a tripod collar.

I have the canon one and an identical ebay one. By looking at them you couldn't tell the difference, but the ebay one is slightly off on the tolerances so the lens doesn't rotate properly in the collar. I would recommend buying the canon one used in the buy/sell section here or look for the genuine one on eBay. They go for about 75-90 used.

Ben you are the man.
75-90 dollars is a lot, that is about 3 tanks of gas for me

I like the third party collars that look exactly like the genuine Canon one. Just know that the alignment mark will likely be off and the paint will wear faster.

I picked up a third party collar on Amazon for the same lens you have. I think it was the Opteka one for around $20. Saved a ton of cash on that and it works great.
