I will start by telling you that I am a bone-head when it comes to computers. Well at least the in's and out's of them anyway. I run small buiness so when I need computer help I call a guy down the road to get me back up and runing.
I got back into photography about a year ago and have been using my Toshiba Satellite laptop for lightweight edits. Now I am looking to have my guy build a new system in the near future, only thing is I dont know what I need. I told him that I planed to use this new system for photo edits then he started talking about quad somthing and ram this and tearabite that?????????????? He also mentioned I might want to look into a Vewsonic 2365 monitor here is the link, http://www.viewsonic.com …d/pro-series/vp2365wb.htm (external link)
Will you guys tell me what you think and what I should look for.

thanks
CM

Since you have access to someone you trust who can build your ideal machine for you, you might as well take advantage of it.

There is plenty of knowledge here with regards to recommending what parts to use, but we need some information first:

What's your budget?
What do you shoot with?
Do you plan to upgrade your camera in the future (and what to)?
How many photos do you edit at once?

Have you Calibrated your Monkey lately?

Now more than ever we need to be a community, working together and for each other, as photographers, as lovers of photography and as members of POTN.

What's your budget? Around $1,500.00. I have a little more to work with but I want to use it for edit software.
What do you shoot with? 50D
Do you plan to upgrade your camera in the future (and what to)? I may go with FF at some point down the road.
How many photos do you edit at once? With what I use now one at a time is slow. Batch takes forever.

Since the link didn't work, dell outlet (google search), then filter out a studio xps 8100.

Save money, enjoy. Add more memory via newegg or the like, not from dell. Save a few hundred.

Dude it's way too expensive for i5 cpu. You can get i7 for as much! Otherwise prices are ok.

This might be the easiest way to go. Can get the computer and monitor for right around $1,000, and should serve the purpose. For a little more you can step up to the i7 processor, which will be a little faster for you.

I build my own because I enjoy it.By time you add up the costs of each components, you are not really saving much.
The only benefit you gain is that you can get EXACTLY what you want.

+1.
These days you may only get a cost saving vs high-power sellers like iBuypower or Alienware. I priced my system last summer before building my own and saving over $1000 by getting all the parts myself, and getting the stuff I wanted, i.e. 10k rpm raptor, dominator ram, classified mobo...e.t.c.
On the other hand, you can now get a decent Dell XPS that we purchased for my parents for a little over $800 which came with i7/6Gb/640Gb and the 4550 video card.
