Sigma 50 f1.4 or canon 24105L for 5D2?

Hi, I am currently tossing up between the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM and the canon 24-105mm f4L.

Obviously these are two very different lenses and I although the canon is much more versatile, the f/4 is the only thing that has me worried (for lowlight and indoor performance as well as bokeh).

I am not sure if I should get the much cheaper sigma and see how that goes for a while or stick with the all rounder lens. This will be my first and only lens (as I am selling my 400D kit and moving up to the 5D MarkII.

Basically I want some opinions on whether or not the 50 is enough as a single walkaround lens for a while (probably until the end of the year) and if it is worth it for the lowlight and IQ advantages over the 24-105L.

Perhaps I worrying too much over the f4 on the 24-105L? Can it still work in say a wedding (without a flash)? I guess this brings up the question of whether I want to be a prime lens or zoom lens kinda guy which I am hoping to get some opinions on.

As for what I am going to be shooting... well it will be my only lens for a while so I want to use it for everything :) But I guess mainly using it on trips and for portraits in all sorts of lighting conditions.

the 50F 1.4 would be more flexible in all kinds of light but of course you will have to feet zoom and in some cases it will be impossible to take some shots because you won't be able to back up far enough to get the whole picture.

why not get the sigma and a sigma zoom? that's about the same prices as the 24-105. but for me if i had to choose only one of these i'd go for the 24-105 but that's due to my own shooting style.

for the record when i travel i usually only take a zoom, on rare occassions i'll take a prime too. i have a 24-70 and the sigma 50F1.4. and when i made the choice to go full-frame i got a 5Dc mainly so i could get more glass :)

f/4 not possible indoors with no flash. I'd consider keeping the xxxD and get the 17-55/2.8 .........

So 2.8 should be fine? What about the 24-70L? There is rumored to be a 24-70L II within the next month no?

2.8 isnt all that fast indoors.

if its going to be your only lens for awhile, go for the 24-105 and pickup a cheap flash for indoors.

I have both lenses on a 5d2 also, and i never use the 24-105 indoors without a flash.

Only an untrained eye can appreciate the sharpness of a lens...

f/2.8 is one stop faster than f/4. In my experience, f/1.4 is barely adequate for low-light without flash.

Absolutely not....

Are you going to be shooting weddings for money?

I agree with this, I like my sigma stopped down between 2.0 and 4.0 depending on DOF needed and using flash. I would rather use low ISO and flash than 1.4 and high iso and no flash.

No, just for fun. I only brought up weddings as an example.

For the price of a 24-105L, you can buy a Sigma 50 and a Tamron 28-75. I have both the 24-105L and Tamron 28-75 and their IQ is the same. The Tamron is also faster.

There's been rumors floating around about it for years, don't wait for it.

You know I am sort of tempted to get the 5Dii with the canon 50mm f1.8 which I can get for just over $100AU. That way I can figure out exactly what 50mm means on a full frame and how I feel about it.

When I figure that out I will be more ready to lay the investment for the right lens but I will have the good camera body ready.

Does that sound right?
