It's all fun and games until someone shoots my dog (His name is Kodi, which was chosen after consideration that our original name idea, Bear, would be a bad idea). 200+ lbs of fur and slobber (but mostly slobber)

To get back to the OP's question (nothing against guns, as I also hunt here in the Yukon), I would highly recommend the 100-400L. It is a good all-around performer and is my most often used lens, for both birds and big game (it also makes a great sunset lens and is not shabby for close-ups and landscape photos, either).

Enjoy your trip!

Julius

For travel, ease of use and flexibility...it stands alone for the purchase loot.

Though in fairness,it rents for $131 insured for 14 days and the 70-200 2.8II is $186. I've much faith in the 100-400 and would roll that way,but could very much understand the allure of the faster glass and perhaps a 1.4x TC for others.............

it will be fine on any canon EF mount camera. so yes, it will work on your camera. It will be a pretty narrow depth of field, even at 100mm if you plan on shooting things closer to you. The IS works well for every focal length to minimize camera shake, and mine lasted a good 9-10 years before giving up the ghost, which i could have repaired, but its just collecting dust (i have a spare lens i use instead)

.50 calibur guns are designed to make a hole through things. tanks, walls, people etc. yes, your .50 will make a hole through a bear, but the problem you have with bears, is they are usually 50ft away or closer when you run into them, if they were any further, they would be the ones running away from you (exception of a hungry black bear).

so the problem you need to solve, is to make the bear STOP, and stop now, which a .50 will not do. you will have a bear with a moderate sized hole in it, that is still coming to kill you, weather or not it ends up alive after mauling you to death.

this is where hunting rifles have the advantage, they aren't SMJ rounds, and leave much larger exit wounds while pushing your target back. unless you have a mushrooming round or hallow point on your .50, and it is slowed way the heck down so that it actually works (sometimes high velocity doesn't play into your hands) you're going to have an even angrier bear that will not only maul you, but perhaps drown you in the ensuring blood as it pummels you from above.

Yeah, aiming center mass wouldn't yield very good results with a .50,,, I was thinking headshot... can't get the one shot one kill mentality out of my head... There's still a lot of brainwashing that needs scrubbing out.

Take your t2i and the two lenses you have. Don't rent anything and don't worry about it too much.

Alaska is amazing by the way, I don't understand these people who are saying leave your camera at home. You'll be kicking yourself at the missed opportunities to snap shots of the scenery as well as your new wife/yourself against breathtaking backdrops like Denali.
