Hi, all So CA people!

There are some really amazing things out here in So CA to shoot, and I was wondering if anyone wanted to get together and do a field trip of sorts?

Some of the places we could visit are the coastline (several glorious spots), several lighthouses, the desert, the Birch Aquarium, the Zoo (LA as well as San Diego), Santa Monica pier (great for people shooting), Venice Boardwalk and on and on.

This is really more of a feeler post, to see if there would be anyone interested in meeting up, and learning from each other, while shooting some of the more interesting places in So CA.

Let me know!

Best-
Noni

Try Northern CA. Its more scenic, and not so hot. :)

Seriously though, good luck finding another SoCal person, its nice to see someone making the effort.

Coming from Sacramento, that is certainly the pot calling the kettle black!

The good season for Southern California is about March.

I might be interested in something like this (Northern or Southern California). Now just doesn't seem like a good time, though. Maybe later in the year after it's cooled down a bit and my schedule isn't quite so busy.

Hey now, its only got up to around 107 up here this year. Thats waaay cooler than Southern CA. :)

Probably shouldn't admit I basing some of my experience on a trip to Barstow, city of wonder. (Wondering why the hell I was staying in Bartsow)

Oh, you want a real Southern California adventure???

The other day, the temperature got to 101 degrees F in Death Valley National Park.

Not bad?

That was the low temperature of the day. The high temperature was 129 F!

Geez, at 129, parts of my car are going to be melting and falling off.

I vote for waiting until about October. October is a good month for photography hiking in Death Valley. The worst of the summer heat has past, and the winter snows haven't started in the Panamint Range.

Don't even think about the desert for at least another month. Back in June I got this temp... air temp was like 100, but the radiant heat from the asphalt & sand make it worse. Inside a parked car, the temp can shoot 20-30 degrees in a few minutes. I can't even imagine what it's been like this past week when the air temp was 115 or something..

It's been murderous, to be sure. I was thinking somewhere along the coast, as a bit of an escape from the heat. While it's not nearly as hot in the shade or as low temps, we're cruising here in Burbank about 106 during the hot part of the day. And I'm in an old bungalow and haven't any air conditioning....it's rather hot.

But hey, October is good, too....I'll put something up about mid-September and see if we can't come up with some local field trips.

Ya know... I'm game to go. I'm always looking for a reason to roadtrip. ;-)a

A friend of mine hooked me up with this link. Although it primarily talks about birds you can ingore it and read about the route. It's nice to know that someone else has already done the exploring for you, plus put up some sample images.

Last weekend another friend and I did the Palomar Mtn route. Man, that was a GREAT route! Nate Harrison Grade is unbelievable - the views were simply amazing. I cannot wait until the frickin' haze lifts so I can go back and get some picks.

We really didn't do much exploring outside of the car because of the heat, but even so I'd still rank it as one of the best backroads I've come across since I've been in CA.

This sounds like fun. Has anyone ever considered shooting the centeral valley? Places like California plateau, pixley, Corcoran etc? I am going to shoot the Cotton Festival in Corcoran this fall and am looking to shoot other such events and places. I know that this is kind of off topic, but I just read "King of California" which details the history of much of the lower SJ valley and I have fallen in love with the history of the valley. I want to capture it in an extended photo series with narrative. I am in for the photo trip around so cal and for the rest of my post... i guess I wanted to flush out the idea with the pros before I set out. Thanks for reading.

Tim, if you were really from Burbank, you would set us up for a photo tour of the Skunkworks. I'm sure that would go over real well with the management.

I've actually posted about it in another topic, but I do photography classes normally based in the Coloma area (It's where California gold was first discovered in case you were wondering). I normally do a couple a year and they are more aimed at people learning how to use their cameras. I just did a class this weekend, and the next is already overbooked as I got listed in the newspapers events section. However, anyone wanting a guide to some of the better areas up in the Sacramento area just let me know and we can work something out.

That is funny. I live across the freeway from the old skunkworks. It is a mall now. If you want, I think I could manage a tour of the parking lot, or perhaps you would like to see the famed Michael's Art Supply? Now getting into 19 and edwards up north might be a bit harder. I believe that is where the new projects coming out of Skunkworks are being tested. As one might imagine the MP would probably redefine shooting for us should we try and access the site with out a letter from George W.
