Debating over a used Canon 70-200 2.8 IS MKl or new Sigma 70-200 2.8 OS

At Abes I can pre-order the Sigma lens for $1498 ( $1699.00 - instant 10% code - 2% bing cashback = $1498

I have been looking for a Canon 70-200 2.8 IS MKl used in mint condition for a decent price ($1350 / $1400) but they seem to sell more in the $1450-$1550 range. This makes the new Sigma even more attractive to me! BUt even if I could find a mint Canon mkl for the price I am looking for, the new Sigma is only around $100 more.

I expect the new Sigma to have better IQ and stabilization than the 70-200 2.8 IS mkl. Thoughts? There is no way in hell I will be able to afford the new Canon mkll, so that is not an option for me.

As far as I know the new Sigma was designed to compete with the new Canon mkll and Nikon VR ll, not the old Canon mkl.

All I know is that I just want to be done thinking about this and might pull the trigger for the Sigma.

Thoughts? Oh, please don't turn this thread into whether the New Sigma is worth the price tag or not, there are already threads for that. And all I care about is IQ / stabilization.

Thanks.

Knowing Sigma, their 70-200 will not be on par with the new MkII and more than likely be like the MkI. If you find the right price for a MkI which I've seen plenty for $1350 then get it. Sigma has lost me on this one. I'll finally have a white lens by the end of the year.

Unless the price of the 17-50F2.8 OS is reasonable, I'll stick with Sigma, but I might get the 17-70.

I should note that I don't expect the new Sigma to be on par with the new Canon mkll. I just want the new Sigma to be at least as good as the old Canon mkl, if not better.

But we really won't know how the Sigma is, until it really comes out.

Very interested as well. It's hard to decide until we see the results from the Sigma 70-200mm OS. As of right now Canon has an advantage of being weather sealed and having lower depreciation (getting it used & L); Sigma has more advanced OS(IS) than MkI. I'd recommend against pre-ordering Sigma before you see the images from it.

I said exactly the same thing: I'll choose Canon's 2.8 IS Mk I in no time over the sigma. I've seen lots of deals through local sellers from Craigslist, ranging from $1300 to $1650. In my opinion, I'd rather have a used MK I then the new Sigma OS which would have to be sent back for recalibration anyway. I've tried the Sigma's II version w/HSM and wasn't too thrilled with it - my 70-200 f/4 totally outperforms it in terms of sharpness and IQ.

We'll have to wait for some reviews to come out from those who actually will purchase them. Until that time, based on my own past experience, I'm not too high on this lens....but that might be changed...who knows.

Which version did u try? The HSM one is pretty fast, although nothing is faster than USM.

I wonder when Tamron will come up with their competitor in the 70-200mm range ?

There's not much of difference if any.

Tamron already has a 70-200mm 2.8 lens, it just lacks HSM/USM and OS/IS.

Tamron has recently announced a development of their first lens with USD (Tamron's USM). Hopefully they'll make a 70-200mm VC USD lens; from what I read their current 70-200mm has a better IQ than Sigma's 70-200mm.

I suspect the new Sigma will outperform the MK1 but not as good as the MK2. We shall see in the near future as this is a hot lens.

My Sigma 70-200 2.8,hung right tight with my Canon version of same(non-IS),regarding images.

It couldn't hang in build quality, nor creature comforts, which more than offset the fiscal differences for me. Canon has long had a grip on the 70-200 2.8's and though it'd be great if a 3rd Party could cut their throats there...it isn't gonna happen............
