Been a very rainy dull day today, except when this guy showed up... I think this is a European Starling... They are very quick and I was only able to get a shot on the ground... What are your opinions on this bird? Many say they are a pain, but why? This is the 41 species to visit my yard in two years... I've always had this bird in the back of my mind, thinking one day one would show up...

Thanks for looking...

You captured a beauty Norman... the colors and detail are exceptional, you did a fine job. The bill on the starling turns yellow in the breeding season... I really enjoy photographing these birds as well as the grackle. Many don't like them because they descend in large flocks and force other song birds away from the feeders... they strongly compete for food. I don't have that problem, I see them mostly in the winter eating mountain ash berries with the waxwings.

Beautiful shot, Norman. I believe they are one of the tougher birds to get close to. Having a feeder helps. Great detail in this shot.

Thanks db, it couldn't have been here for long from when I first seen it, as it left just after this shot...

Nice catch, Norman. We have plenty in our garden at the moment but I love watching them, particularly when they're fighting over the suet cake! You can also tell the difference in the sexes of the starlings during breeding season as the base of the bill in the male is blue and in the female is pink. So this one you have here is a male :D
