Hi guys/gals - I recently chose a 58/2 Helios 44M-4 as my first vintage lens. I've managed to read about adapters and have confused myself over which adapters are suitable - the push-pin type appear to be a requirement if I want the aperture to work - is that right?

I bought this...

The lens you bought doesn't have an "M" (manual) switch, so yes you will require a flanged adapter, or you could just wedge the pin, but I would get the flanged adapter.

hi there, thanks for the reply - is there a specific brand or source from where I might get a decent flanged adapter?

^^^i'm using 2 "kiwi" marked ones, they are good: http://www.ebay.it …apter&hash=item2ebf2a096c (external link)
in general the black ones are better, as the silver ones could have some internal reflexion affecting the image quality

I don't bother too much about brand, but usually go by sellers feed back, especially on eBay. There are plenty to choose from on eBay UK.

RE: Black or silver, I prefer silver, the reason is. I use M42 lenses, which have a screw on thread and some times the black ones, which are coated can bite and make the lens more difficult to remove. The silver ones are quite shiny, but I have never found a problem with light reflection. However, I tend to use a lens hood with manual lenses, in fact, one of my favourite lenses, a Helios 135 has a neat little built-in hood, which just pulls out.

One more warning, using manual lenses can become addictive.:)

I've just read on an alternative eBay advert that the Helios 44-M4 58/2 is not full frame compatible? Is this true? My understanding was that vintage lenses had an image circle that covered the 35mm film area.

of course is FF compatible. designed for 24X36MM film cameras, that is the actual "FULL FRAME", eons before crop sensor or even APS cameras arrival :D

It is true that some lenses are not compatible with the 5D, but yours will be fine. If you are in doubt, check the link below.

Heya,

I use the 44-2 with my 5D classic often. It's fine.

I use this adapter. (external link) It's flanged, heavy, durable. I have two others that are black and made of much lighter metal material. I greatly prefer the heavier, more durable one. I wanted metal that will take more torque over the years.

Very best,

Are you focusing at infinity? No mirror hitting the lens?

My 44m4 focuses to infinity without hitting the mirror no problem on my 6D. Does yours hit the mirror on your 5D?

Oh yeah. It is at infinity, the mirror does not hurt. :)
