Canon 7D - "cannot communicate with battery" error

Hi Folks,

I have a 7D with 2 Canon LP-E6 batteries - couple weeks ago i got "cannot communicate with battery" errors with both batteries - reseated the batteries a few times and everything started working again until this morning.

I got the error this morning - one battery was pretty low so i put the 2nd one in and it wouldn't communicate - so, i searched the forum and saw some similiar issues with the 5D mk II where one solution was to remove the internal battery as well.

I done that and it recognised the charged battery again - so i was charging the flat battery and decided to see if it would recognise that - it did, so i took it out to finish charging, put in the charged one and got the same problem again - the camera refused to recongise either battery again.

So, i took the LP-E6 out again, tried reseating a few times, then left it for 3 or 4 minutes, put it back and it worked .... anyone any ideas ? camera ? batteries ? me ??

thanks,
eamon

Off the top of my head, I wonder if your internal battery's voltage is good? If it's dropped below a certain tolerance, things like this could be affected.

i have some cheap non canon batteries for our 5 and 7 d's and we get the no communication error every time, just select use this battery anyway. they onlything you lose is the batter's charge level. perhaps you batteries little information circuitry both died, did you wash them in the laundry or shoot in the rain/sea mist any time recently? what environment could both of them come into contact with to short out two inlaid notched contacts?

thanks guys - i'll try getting a new internal battery, it's worth a shot.
the batteries have not been exposed to a harsh environment, no, nor have i allowed them to be shorted, i keep the cover on the spare when not in the camera.

it happens consistently now when i change the battery

thanks

Since it is happening with both batteries.... what are the odds ? It would suggest that the problem is with the camera....maybe poor connection inside the battery compartment or some other flaky circuitry inside the 7D.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

Agree, it sounds like a contact problem in the camera. I had a similar problem in my 5DII, when the bat's were put into the camera. Those same batteries worked correct when seated in the battery grip, so - the problem was in the camera.

eamo,

Was your issue ever resolved? My 11 month old 7D just started doing this last night, and Canon has asked me to ship it back to them for repair. Wanted to see how others with this problem had resolved it.

Hi, short story, yes, i eventually sent it back for a warrenty repair.

longer story, i put it off for as long as i could as i needed the camera and the problem was initially intermittant, if i reseated the battery(s) a few times it would eventually recognise it. Eventually, though, it stopped doing even that though the camera would still function. Week or so after sending it for repair i had it back and it's been fine since :)

regards,
eamon

Well, that's encouraging. Maybe this will turn out to be no big deal for me, too. Thanks.

Well, shipped it out on tuesday with the courtesy label that canon e-mailed me, and it arrived at canon today, signed for by Santana (there's one for the VH-1 where are they now files). I will keep updating here so others in the future who have this problem can see how long it takes and what to expect. I forgot to remove my CF card, so I'm gonna call Canon later today, once the camera is logged into their system, and have them make a note of it.

Got my acceptance e-mail today (Monday) after they received the camera on Friday. The e-mail estimates it should be repaired and shipped back within 7 days, so that appears to be good news.

My 7d just started doing the same, and it doesn't make any difference whether I am using the camera with the grip installed or not. It just will not communicate with the batteries (and the batteries work fine in another Canon body)

My question is how do I remove and check the camera's internal battery? Sorry, but I wouldn't have a clue where to look for it

Open the battery door and remove the battery. Near the door's hinge you'll see the battery holder that can be gripped by the ribbed side and slid out of the chamber.
