Hi friends,

i have a new laptop with a wifi adapter but my desktop doesnt have one.
I know i can transfer data by hooking up a RJ45 crosswire cable.

but how can i do that wireless ly.

1. can i just buy a usb wifi adapter and plug into the desktop and then ask my laptop to talk to my desktop that way?
2. or do i need a router and a usb wifi? i don't care about getting internet on my laptop, i just want to transfer files/ photo from my laptop to my desktop. i dont need any wifi system in my house as i am just happy with my desktop hooked up to my cable modem with the RJ45 cable?

Thanks much

dennis

Easiest way to get a wireless router and add a wireless NIC card for the desktop. Now your local network is totally wireless and no having to mess with RJ45 cables. All can surf web too.

Other method is to use a hard wired 4 port router (uses RJ45 cables) and then add a Wireless Access Point to the router. This allows desktop to do local network and also surf web, and still offer wireless connection for the laptops through the WAP.

Not to be a jerk but I too use to call it RJ45 cables

the tech friends I have said RJ45 is the plug type on the cable its called a cat5 or cat6

so now I call it a cat5 patch cable. I like teh RJ45 name better it sounds smarter :D

Don't try to confuse me with the facts, my mind is already made up.

A slightly different route (not wireless) for transferring files which uses USB ports,

"The Tornado PC to PC Data Transfer Cable"
http://thetornado.com/transfer_files.asp (external link)

TigerDirect.com has it on sale for $9.99 in their email exclusives ad. (reg. $20)

Mostly you have some ports at you router. If you can set up your router next to your desktop, you can connect it with a short RJ45 cable. The laptop will connect wirelessly and your done.

Dennis,
Would it be easier and cheaper just to use a USB stick?;)
