It seems to be focused on the part of the hair brushed to her side.
Then again, it's hard to tell with a tiny web image.

Possibly but hard to tell in such a small image..The "softness" is more than likely attributed to the lens and not the camera..

Patrick,, if anyone tells you the 50D can't produce sharp images tell them from me,, bull sh!t!!

nice to know jurgen
i knew the lens was a limiting factor but it was not a serious shoot, just trying to get some practice

I felt the same way when using my 28-135 kit lens that came with the 50d. Then I bought a 70-200L f/4 IS and wow! Shortly after I bought a 17-55IS and I no longer second guess if any of my pictures will be sharp enough rather than how can I creatively sharpen the image.

I didn't think OP was thinking her shot wasn't sharp!?!?!

However, OP (and others who post images with "no post-processing added"), should know that just because they did no "post processing" that doesn't mean that there wasn't any processing done to the image...
1. If the image was a JPEG posted directly from the camera, then the internal settings of the camera "post-processed" the image.
2. If it were a RAW image, the JPEG settings in the camera would set the INITIAL processing parameters to the settings in DPP prior to conversion to JPEG...e.g. if the in-camera sharpness setting had been set to maximum, that would be "7" on the sharpness scale (out of a maximum of 10) in DPP
So you see, even when shooting RAW imges, there is no such thing "no post-processing" because whatever those RAW settings were in the camera...from contrast, color and sharpness, to white balance and picture styles (neutral, portrait, etc)...those are the image settings you convert from RAW to JPEG and eventually post on the net....unless you change them in DPP...

When posting an image, the only way to accurately describe such an image is to identify the shot settings...
E.G.:
WB (shot settings, shade, etc...)
Picture style (portrait, neutral, etc)
Sliders all set to "neutral" (or "0") in DPP, DPP sharpness set to ____ (1-10)..."

very true.

It could also be if it was uploaded to photobucket. I have noticed that pics I post are sharp but then when I upload them here from photobucket they look quite soft.

It IS a very nice pic! I love the expression and the guy in the background.

Actually, my first 50D was a kit with the 28-135 and I got very sharp images from that combination. When I sold the 50D last fall I held onto the 28-125 and used it on my 35mm body and for a short time on the 5D2. I think the 28-135 is a little underestimated by some. Sure, it's not L quality but it certainly isn't soft, at least not the copy I had.

Another thing I've noticed is that the 50D can handle a lot more post processing sharpening before nasty artifacts take effect than my 20D..

...I think it's safe to say that bigger files in general NEED more pp sharpening...a smaller JPEG file (not in L x W so much as in number of pixels) needs very little sharpening.

Getting to go around through the forum posts for all the different bodies and hearing all the gossip going from here to there about the various models the pictures tell it all. I think the images from the 50D are comparible to the 7D and above. The rebels are great cameras but so often the images just appear flat. The 50D for it's price and ability is an awesome deal. Granted the images taken are affected by those that take them. But through all the pages the 50D is up there with the big boys.

Thanks everyone for sharing your images. They are great to see.

Does anybody say the 50D isn't sharp? I can't say I've heard that one before. Most peoples' gripes about the 50D seem to concern it's noise handling when compared to the 40D.
