U505

Last time I posted pics of U505 it started a debate. I've since learned that the error in my previous post was that this was the only German submarine captured in WWII by the US Navy. Anyway, I am aware that the British did capture one in 1941, but that this sub was also an important catch, even though it was late in the war that it was captured.

This shot was handheld, braced on a handrail, for 10 seconds. I tried several times with a flash, and it just didn't do justice, so being digital, I figured it wouldn't cost me anything for processing, so I went for it. Braced on the rail, shut down the aperture to let the people blur out, and took the shot. Wadaya think?

I haven't quite learned enough Photoshop to get that going on yet....

I'll be there this weekend. I can't wait to see the U-505.

The new exhibit is very nice. Having been a submariner in the Navy, there are parts of the video presentation where I get choked up... But the whole thing, in my opinion, is done in a manner very respectful to all involved, and even makes mention of the single casualty involved in the capture - a German submariner who was found dead on board the boat when American forces boarded it. I only wish the museum could offer special tours of the areas of the boat that are blocked off, perhaps special tours for former submariners. I would really love to go topside and get the view from the bridge. I did ask while there, and was told that for insurance reasons, they could not allow anyone topside. The guide even mentioned the name of one of her former crew members, and said he couldn't even allow him topside. It's a shame that litigation in America has caused so many things to be closed off by insurance companies.

That is quite a shame. Going topside would be a blast. I'll say that going on a U-boat is such a unique experience, I won't complain.
