Would this Domke f-2 setup work?

So im trying to decide on which bag to invest in..

I really like the look of the Domke F-2...just something about it catches my eye more than any other bag ive seen...

I think using a 3 slot insert put into one of the corners to carry a nifty fifty, 18-55 IS, and another slot for either a flash, or a future lens, would the rest of the space fit a 1D Mark 2 with a 70-200 2.8 attached(hood reversed if needed)

Does anybody use a setup similar to this?

The Domke 3-slot insert will occupy just about the whole back of the bag; you could fit an ungripped body in there, but not a gripped one. If you want room for a gripped body, you'll need to move up to the F-1x or settle for using only 2 of the 3 compartments (I suggest that rather than getting a 2-compartment insert since the compartments in the 3-compartment 720-230 are about 2/3" longer than the compartments on the 720-220).

I used to have mine setup that way as a truck bag, I would jump out with the body and lens, leaving the rest of the gear there.

At the time it carried the following in any position(stowed or mounted to the body)
10-22,16-35 2.8, 24-70 2.8,70-200 2.8, a flash, and all the usual filters, manuals, batts, etc. No experience w/a grip.

The 70-200 is a little tall when stowed vertically but the lid snaps would hold everything secure. I never carried the bag other then to and from the truck by the short strap.

I sold the 16-35, but still have the rest of the gear in a TT40, but i've been thinking about going to a smaller shoulder bag(something with an open top and flap instead of the zipper) and using the F-2 as a truck storage bag for what ever gear I don't have on me in the smaller bag at the time. Id pull out the 3 lens holder, maby drop in a single, and carry 2 extra lens in the small bag w/flash.

well...i now have 2 clashing responses....anybody else?

Jon is correct - I also use the 3-slot insert in my F2 and it takes up the entire length of the bag.

An ungripped SLR does fit in front of the insert - the only difference between your diagram and 'real-life' is that you won't be able to fit the side of the body down the side of the insert.

I just noticed you want to carry Nifty and an 18-55, which is an EF-S lens not designed to work on your 1D2. You sure about that?

If you check the F2 specs, the inside dimensions are 11x6.5x8.5" The 720-230 insert is 11x2.5x7.75". I generally swear by the 720-230 insert and I can assure you that your options with a gripped body like the 1D2 are to use only 2 of the compartments, or to stash the body/lens combo vertically in the bag. And that isn't going to work with the 70-200 if you want to close the bag. The shortest 70-200 is about 7.6", and the body will add a good 2" to the height of the combo. And the 1D2 is 6.1" high - it'll fit in the F2, on its side, but you won't have any space to spare for the insert to be usable.

If you want to stack the 50 and the 18-55 (or whatever you replace that with) in one compartment you could use a second compartment for the flash and collapse the third to accommodate the grip/battery housing. But you just won't be able to fit a 1D2 with 70-200, as you've diagrammed, and still use all 3 compartments of a Domke insert in an F2. Put an ungripped body like a 5D or 50D, yes. But not a gripped one.

Here's my F2 with IIRC a 20D and D60, 100-400 (about the same size as the 70-200) on the 20D, 24-70 on the D60, and Sigma 15-30 and Tamron 90 mm macro in the main compartment (720-230 insert). If there were a grip on the D60, you'd be able to close the bag over it, but as you can see there's no room for a grip if you want to use that end compartment.

Nah. Your photo is set up just so he could see how little space there is for a grip. You left out all your gear just so he could see the problem. Mine's too cluttered for anyone to appreciate exactly how little room there is. :{)#

Oops didnt mean a 18-55..lol im not with it lately...i was thinking a 16-35.

Thanks for the help guys..Now that ive seen the f1 in a picture it doesnt look so big afterall...it looks gigantic on some sites ive seen it on.

The F1x is really petite - here it is on my biggest bag:

One thing - the 16-35, with hood, might not fit into the 720-230 insert. I use an OpTech Hood Hat inside my 100-400 hood and pop a small prime, like Nifty, in it and rest the long lens on top. That's how the F1x is set up above.

i had my f-1x set up that way in africa with 1d mark III with 100-400L attached. i removed one divider of the 3-compartment insert and carried a 30d in the "big" compartment and also carried the 16-35L II and 50 1.4.

i couldn't have done the same with the f2.
