Hello

Having read-reread and read again nearly all infiormation I can on fill flash, I still have a question

I use 550ex 1Dmk11 and an omnibounce.

My question is , is the best way to get good results with fill flash outdoors to have the flash in bounce mode -i.e facing upwards or direct position with the onmnibounce.

The whole flash thing scares me and I hate using it, but recently took some photos on a very bright day here in the UK and it looked like I should have used fill flash.

I shoot Av mode most of the time and so I believe I should set the compensation on the flash to say -1, but its the position of the flash that I still can't figure out.

Cheers

What exactly would you bounce off of outdoors? ;)
The Omnibounce doesn't do much outdoors. You need to point it directly at the subject. If you are in ETTL, the camera will detect reduced light reaching the subject and increase output, defeating the purpose of the Omnibounce. If you use Manual flash, you can use it head on to soften the light. An easier method is to affix a 3x5 index card to the back of the 550 with a rubber band so that half the card is above the flash head and point the flash at a 45 degree angle. You could also get a Lumiquest Pocket Bouncer, which is what I use.
