I'm curious to know besides one being 30mm and the other 35mm

is there really that big of a difference at the IQ between them ?

Can the 30 be compared to the 35 or not really ?

Have you owned both,either/or, and what is your take on the lens ?

Sigma 30/1.4 will not fit your 5D's.

Yes, I am aware of that. I've actually been thinking about picking up a 7D with 35mm or 30mm for certain purposes. Wont be till this summer but its good to plan ahead.

wanted to get some feedback.

I went for the sigma 30/1.4 with a 40D.
Like it very much for low available light.
Did not go for the 35/1.4 because it would be to close to my 50/1.4 and the price tag.

If you're sticking with a crop, there is NO need to spend the money on the 35L. The Sigma 30mm is probably my favorite lens, it always produces images that make me go "wow!"..I tend to shoot it wide open all the time as I love the "look" of a shallow DOF "normal" shot.

About the only other set of gear I would prefer in its place would be a 5DII + 50mm f/1.2....

a 7D + 30/1.4 won't beat your 5D II + 50/1.2L

I have the 35f2 and it is a sharp lens. It is sharper stopped down, but it is limited to f2.
If you are considering the 35f1.4, then go for it. It will work on your 5D and on a crop as well.
It will give you more flexibility with your full-frame cameras, and the 35f1.4 is sharper at f2 than the 35f2 wide open. The 35f1.4 will be a longish normal lens on a crop, and a useful fast wide lens on the 5D. If you have the cash and don't mind the weight, it seems like a good choice.
Stopped down, the f2 is good. Even so, it appears sharp even in the distant corners - but never quite gets as sharp as the center if you pixel peep.
I find it much easier to hold the 35 at longer shutter speeds (e.g. 1/40) than longer lenses on my crop cameras. I have to go to 1/60 with a 50mm lens and at least 1/100 on an 85 (but prefer faster shutter speeds for the 85 on a crop).
Since you already have a 50 for your 5D, the 35 won't be very different on a crop - just a bit longer.
Lots of people seem to like the Sigma 30f1.4, if you get a good copy.
It would be a great low-light lens on your cameras.

I have the Sig 30 and thought it was a great lens. I sold it thinking I was going FF, decited against that idea and picked up a 7D w/ a 35L. I'm glad I did. This lens blows the Sig 30 out of the water. Sorry to all those who disagree. AF is amazingly fast on the 35L, much faster and more accurate than the Siggy. The 7D could have some impact on that, I was using the Sig on my 40D. Color seems to be better on the 35L as well.

Just my opinion, there is near a $1000 price difference, is it worth that? to me it was, but I have the disposalbe income and can appreciate the advantages of the L.

I bought my Sigma 30 f/1.4 specifically for my 40D (like there was any other option for me). You know what I mean.
I expect to leave it on my 40D period (outside of the 60mm Macro if I buy it). It is reserved for those situations where if my 5DII is not set up already to take a quick shot...or if the missus wanted to use a camera for a shot. This lens has worked better than any other lens that I've mounted on that body outside of my Canon L Lenses.

I reserve my Canon L Lenses for the 5D Mk II because they shine so brightly on that body. If I had to choose between the two combos (40D & Siggy 30 to the 5D Mk II & 35L[COLOR=black]) I would be partial to the 5D Mk II - 35L combo. There is not a considerable drop-off in IQ when comparing the 30 f/1.4 to the 35L though.

I gotta be honest. I usually quite like your photos, but those shots you post every so often of your kid on the pot kinda freak me out.

I am using 30/1.4 on 7D. It's sharp, AF is very fast and accurate. I think 7D 's AF system does contribute to the AF performance. MA is required in my case but once it's done the lens just works smoothly.

I dont have 35L to compare with. I thought of buying 35L too but the price difference just made me give it a second thought. I decided to try the sigma first as I can always sell it on the buy/sell forum here if it doesnt work for me.

So far I am happy with it's performance and IQ. I know i the L counterpart is always better, but that just can't justify the $1000 price difference in my case. I am not professional photographer tho I shoot weddings.

Shot #1 is a great shot. I like how the camera is perfectly level with the chains attaching exactly to the top of the frame. The background softness is just right. The grey area on the 1/3 line, the vignetting, and the little bit of fill flash are just right and good white balance.

I haven't used the Sigma 30mm, but the Canon 35mm f/2 is very compact and performs well. The Canon 28mm f/1.8 USM is also a very nice lens, not too big and closer to "normal" focal length on a 7D. Normal being defined as the diagonal dimension of the sensor.
