Say you are buying a 5DII.

Which 4 of these 8 do you pick?

(One stipulation being that one of the UWA zooms must be in the bag.)

16-35 F2.8L II
17-40 F4L

24-70 F2.8L
24-105 F4L IS

70-200 F4L IS

35 1.4L
85 1.8
135 F2L

What do you shoot?

For me:

16-35 ( I have the 17-40, but shooting more indoor lately, and want the extra stop)

24-70 (I have both, but it gets more use)

70-200 (I prefer the f/2.8, but gotta have at least one of these)

85 (The 135 is more fun, but the 85 will get more use)

I would go

17-40 it's really good for full frame.
70-200 no need for 85, this one covers the range, more versitile
and fast prime in the middle like 50 1/4

24-70 F2.8L

135 F2L

Something wide for landscapes, a general use portrait/low light/everything lens, a wide, fast prime and something a little longer with beautiful, beautiful bokeh.

As a general package:
17-40 F4L
24-70 F2.8L
70-200 F4L IS
35 1.4L

I would swap the 85 for the 35 if portraits is your thing

I'm not sure what you're trying to do here....you've posted the same question on FM...

If you're thinking you're going to get the so called the best of the best lenses then you'll be disappointed. Lenses are important but it's your skills that make the difference.

Nikon/Fuji.
Gear is important but skills are very important :)

I have a 5D2 and I own a 16-35/2.8L II, 24-70/2.8L, 70-200/2.8LIS and an 85/1.8.

I have no idea if that helps but that's how I choose to float my boat. I also have a 50/1.4 and 100-400, and I'm hanging onto my 17-55 to keep as a backup to my 24-70, for use on my 7D.

I can see a lot of sense in the 24-105 for a 5D2, if you don't need f/2.8 for low light stuff such as weddings. I'm sure it is an awesome walkabout choice, but I want f/2.8 or faster where possible.

24-70mm

70-200 f/2.8 IS (not f/4)...
35L...
85L...

I could do just about anything with that set if I had to. Not absolutely everything...

well the first two are a given: 24-70 and 70-200 (2.8 if you could swing it).

the next two? guess it depends. if you have to have wide then 16-35 II. If you would only like to have wide and its not as critical then save the coin and get the 17-40 and upgrade the 70-200 to a 2.8. (i have the 70-200 f4 non is and am longing for something faster with narrower dof. it wont be long before that one goes up for sale)

the prime? i would be torn between the 35 and 135. they are both special breeds. tighter portraits or slimmer dof on 3/4 portraits go with the 135. if you are doing groups or want a nice wide perspective for people with a narrow dof then look to the 35. or can the 16-35 and just get both the 35 and 135. the 135 isnt as long as you think on full frame.

the 85? seems to be a nice lens. ive never shot with it, but from what ive seen it can hold its own, but doesnt seem to be as creamy smoooth in the oof areas as the 135 and definately has more ca than the 135. If you want a 50, look into the sigma 50 1.4. seems to have quite the cult following, and i will probably look to one of these myself.

good look with this!

I currently own the following with a 5DII:

16-35L (mkI)
24-70L
35L
135L

I'm thinking about switching the 135L for a 70-200 f/2.8 IS though. Love the 135L, just thinking a little more reach and IS might be nice.
