Hello All,

I just bought a 5Dc on here and I wonder if I should just send it straight to Canon for the mirror service? I sent Canon an email and they stated "We do not recommend that you send in the camera for service until you actually have a problem with it. The mirror issue does not affect all 5D cameras."

I have read on here that some folks send theirs in and Canon seems to calibrate and clean for free (as well as give an accurate shutter count), I have also read some folks have paid for this service...

So - two questions:

Would you send it in automatically
If you did send it in Which is the most likely location to do the extras for free?

I have used the Canon service center in Irvine for a lens repair and they did an excellent job.

Thanks - jriley

If there is no problem with the camera, why send it in?

I wouldn't throw any more money or time into it unless it has an issue. Enjoy it until it really needs to be serviced.

Well it's a used camera, IMO you get what you paid for. Get it cleaned, Mirror/shutter checked and tuned up, for optimal performance. Just because you got it at POTN, does not mean the seller was 100% honest about how or what he did with the camera.

i agree with the above...unless you are relying on this camera for paid gigs and have no back up. if it is your only body i would probably send it in and have it done. a buddy of mine just recently had his mirror fly off his 5dc during a shoot. luckily he had his 1ds3 sitting around to fill in. (yes he prefers the 5dc to the ds3!)

Well, theres 2 different things in your post. Your talking about getting the mirror fix (which Canon will fix for free but only if its broken) and getting it serviced - which is not usually free.

For the mirror fix, you can't just send it in - you need to get the repair pre-approved by Canon and a repair order number befor you ship it.

So in essence you have no choice. Canon already told you they won't fix the mirror unless it falls off.
And how do you know it hasn't had the mirror fix done already?

As far as service goes, it kind of depends on how old the camera is and how much (and hard) its been used. Mine is like new - bought after they went out of production. Won't need service for a while.

Congrats on the camera!

If you really want to send it in then give a call to canon, they'll ask serial # and let you know if the mirror is fixed; if not you can send it in. Calibration etc. is not included; in fact if you specifically ask for cleaning and shutter counts they may charge 50 bucks or so. Personally if everything looks good I wouldn't send it in.

yeah thats what i said as well. if its critical work, speed or af speed dependent then he will use the ds3. for normal work, most portraits and such he chooses the 5dc. im still rockin my 5dc and dont seen an upgrade coming my way for quite some time still.
