Some more Pony baseball from Saturday. Thank heaven's for LR. Makes processing much faster for me.

All shot with the 20d, 70-200 2.8 Sigma maybe one or two with the Sigma 100-300 f4.

Let me know what you think.

Scott

Photo 1 is awesome, my only thing would be maybe try to get the shutter speed up so the ball isn't a blur? Number 2 is really great too, like the ball being cracked by the bat, and how sharp everything else is. 3 Is an ace, the ball is sharp and really tells the story, 4 my only comment would be the same as number 1, 5 looks like he just knocked it outta the park. All great pictures!

AF. Manual is still a learning curve. And the auto focus is working really well for me. I am very happy with the performance of the 70-200.

I shot earlier in the game with the 100-300 and it seemed like the focus was off for some reason. I'll have to play with that one a little bit more and see how it is performing. I use that one mostly for soccer and I want to make sure that it focussing properly. I want to nail shots like I have been getting for baseball for soccer.

I am curious as to why you are saying I should up the shutter speed. I am shooting manual and focussing on getting faces in the shots and exposing them properly.

Can you provide me with some additional information? I realize that the ball and bat are sometimes a little blurry showing motion. You want me to up the SS to freeze the ball and the bat?

Won't that affect the exposure if I am exposing for the faces?

Yes, it will affect your exposure, so you must compensate with either a larger aperture or higher ISO.

There are various combinations of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO that will work for any shot. You have to choose the one that will give you the results your looking for. Personally I would use a faster shutter speed too, I try not to shoot below 1/2500th even for youth. I usually shoot at f2.8, so I raise the ISO to get the SS I want and get a properly exposed photo. Even on bright sunny days I usually don't shoot below ISO 400.

Okay, but I was shooting in bright sun, the lens was at 2.8 and the iso was at 100.

In the second set, here is some addtl info on image 4:
Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/1250)
Aperture: f/2.8
Focal Length: 168 mm
ISO Speed: 100

If I increase the SS, won't that impact the xposure on the face? I would think that shooting this image at that SS it should be enough to freeze the ball. But obviously it was not enough.

I will bump my SS while shooting this weekend and see how that impacts the image.

Thanks for the feedback.

To raise the shutter speed if you are already at 2.8 you must increase the ISO. As Matt does, I also always shoot at 200-400 ISO even in bright sunlight.

If you're not a "M" kind of guy, you can set the camera to Tv mode, dial in something around 1/2,500, and set the ISO to auto.

I am an "M" kind of guy. I work on getting up to 1/2500 and then set my iso or vice versa. I am not afraid if shooting at high iso. I shoot wrestling at iso 800 all winter long.

I really appreciate all the feedback and suggestions. It is exactly why I post here. To learn and expand my shooting skills.

Despite the ball and bat blur these are some nice shots a few hot spots but overall nicely done.
