Hello all! I think that I am about to finally pull the trigger on studio strobes (Einsteins when they are in stock), and since they have enough light to fill a larger modifier, I am looking hard at the PLM's. However, I am not sure what I really want and could use some feedback.

First of all, I plan to use the strobes for mostly sports, but I do individual/family portraits and large-group shots (some over 100 people) at church which is why I'm looking to get a couple of PLM's. (I may eventually do team shots as well, but that hasn't happened yet...) So far, I've tried to do my best with speedlights (borrowing additional when I have big groups), but I've not invested in big modifiers when I only had the little lights.

I'm unsure of what would be most useful. White vs. silver? 86" vs. 64"? I think that I would go with the front diffuser for whatever I get, but I'm still new enough (read: inexperienced) to the portrait side of things that I haven't really developed a style of my own. I'm still learning, and I'm not ashamed of that. However, I could use some insights to help me make my decision. Thanks.

I'm off lining my cage with newspaper.

For portraits, I've always felt bigger is better. I bought an AB800 with their 5ft softbox, and LOVED it.
I've since gotten two silver 86 plm's, with the front diffuser. I've only used it for a few portraits, and I can't say I'm totally in love with it yet. It might just be TOO big. I find it harder to "feather" the light. As I said, I'm still working with it, but that's my first impressions. It would be great for groups, and my dual 86's do great for even, large area lighting, but I just haven't gotten the hang of using one for formal portraits YET.
I haven't tried them outdoors yet, but I would think in any kind of wind you'd have to be careful..they are basically an umbrella.
So, to answer your question, I'd go with the 86 silver, with the diffuser for your large, indoor church shots..will work great for that. Outdoor shots will be awesome as well, as long as it's not too windy.
Large groups, take the front panel off and you'll be able to throw a lot of light.

This might help:

Personally, I feel the PLM silver 64 is a great compromise concerning size and efficiency.

I really like my PLMs.
I have the 86" silver as well as 64" silver and white.
The white I use with the back spill kill cover.
The Silver I use mostly without the defuser.

You can go here (external link) for two galleries that were shot with PLMs. The main was an 86" without defusion, fill was a 64" white and for Char there was also a kicker that was a 64" white.

There is a page on my tutorial site that illustrates how various modifiers work with the Genesis 300B.

The last two images are with the 86" PLM. Its interesting how efficent it is focusing the light.
