Birthday Cake Candle Shots?

What is the technique to take a decent birthday cake candle shot?

I am talking about dimming the lights with only the candle illuminating the birthday boys/girls face.

I can never get enough light from the candle to illuminate the face. is their another 'trick' involved?

You should have NO problems getting a shot like this. Obviously how bright it is depends on how old the kid is ( ), but just crank open the aperture, up the ISO, and make sure your shutter speed is fast enough.

Since the exposure value of any candle is similar, if you done it once then the same setting can also be applied repeatedly.
My base exposure is usually around 1/50, iso 1600 and f1.8, with some minor exposure adjusment, maybe around +-0.3 stop because of variation in number of candles and the candle brightness etc.
However, what looks to me as the 'normal' exposure can be underexposed according to your taste, so ymmv.
