Should the 430 EXII make any noise?

I've noticed noise coming from my 430 flash, sounds almost mechanical or maybe like whining but I don't think there's anything mechanical in there, that's about the only way I can describe it. I hear it while the AF beam is firing or during the preflash, not sure which. Am I paranoid?

Is it the zoom head adjusting for changes in focal length?

Nah, I was testing out my new 15-85 USM, you cannot hear it zoom (i'm still amazed by that) maybe this has been going on since i've had the flash since the zoom on my other lenses is so noisy compared to this one...

There is a mechanical sound when the flash adjusts for focal length of the lens being used as you zoom the lens. I suspect this is what you are hearing

If you alter your focal length without activating the meter or AF, the flash head doesn't zoom till metering or AF is started. Once started and while it's running, the flash head will zoom in and out with your lens. Note that the flash will only auto zoom like this when the flash head is in the forward facing position and is set to auto zoom. You can also manually zoom your flash.

you probably mean "you can't hear it focus," because the focus motor on some lenses are noisy. you shouldn't really hear a lens zoom.

yeah, it's the flash head zooming to match the focal length on your lens.

Thanks guys, I was able to reproduce the noise after reading your posts, I never even though about the flash head zooming to match fl but it makes perfect sense. Gotta love POTN....
