The tree with the giant thorns looks like it might be a pochote....a prize hardwood usually found in Central America...but can range north into the temperate regions of CA.
I've seen those around here, but I don't know what they are...

I saw it advertised as being totally free. I don't have microsoft office.
I tried it once, but it was a bit outside my comfort zone and I went back to Microsoft Office, especially when I could buy Office 2007 Standard (Word, Outlook, Powerpoint and Excel) with the ability to install it in three computers at the base for about $70.
