Hello,
I am a relative newbie and am taking a class this weekend on taking photos of waterfalls and I know I need to get a circular polarizer for my 10-22 lens. Any suggestions on which one I could get that won't break the bank, but not be total garbage? I understand that you get what you pay for, but budget is an issue at this time.

Thank you for any suggestions,
Molly

What are you looking at for your budget? You'll want a slim circular polarizer so that you don't get vignetting.

100.00? Is that reasonable?
Would rather not pay that much-but I will if I need to.
Thanks,
Molly

For $100 you could get this (external link) slim filter, although it is not multi-coated (to reduce flare). But if you're just starting out, then it should work for you well until you can afford a multi-coated filter which is another $80.

However, if you are ok with vignetting, then you could this (external link) multi-coated one for $120.

You don't need a cpl filter.
Your camera and lens will still produce good images without one.
A cpl can help improve your final images if used properly but it is not a neccessity to have one.

What would you suggest then, if you don't mind me asking.

For waterfalls, you would probably be as well, if not better, off with a 3 or more stop neutral density filter. See if you can find a B+W, Hoya, or Heliopan one - they make the best optical quality. Usually what you want in waterfalls is a longish exposure. A polarizer will help with that, but a ND is stronger, so lets you get longer exposures.

I haven't tried it, but I've read that using a CPL with the 10-22 can produce some uneven results in the wide end. I just decided to skip the CPL all together with this lens. So far, I haven't had any regrets.

Ok, so how do I know the stops on the lens? I know I am ignorant, and I apologize! I appreciate everyone's help! Any specific suggestions? I know I like B W filters.

Yeah, no probs.
A few have beaten me to the punch as per above but when I use the 10-22 I don't use a filter (except the UV which I have on all my lenses - but that's another can of worms which I probably shouldn't have opened)
Admittedly, I shoot mainly sports but when time permits I do a bit of other stuff - landscape etc and have never used a cpl or any other filter - ever.
The 10-22 is a great lens and it would be one of my favourites.

Hope this and what others have posted help

Also have a read of this https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=414088
lots of useful info there that explains all the basics.

Neutral Density filters may describe themselves several ways, depending on the maker. Some will just say "3 stops". Others will say 8x. Still others will say 0.9. All would be the same. Every stop the filter gives you they'll multiply the "x" by 2, or add 0.3 to the decimal, so 1 stop = 2x = 0.3 ND; 2 stops are 4x or 0.6 ND, 3 stops = 8x or 0.9 ND and so on.

Molly, I agree with Jon. If you are trying to reproduce pictures like this:

IMAGE: http://frsimon.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/choushi-waterfall.jpg

then you should be looking at ND filters.

That is what I am supposed to be learning to shoot- so it looks like a ND filter for me.
I REALLY appreciate everyone's help.
