That is what I am supposed to be learning to shoot- so it looks like a ND filter for me.
I REALLY appreciate everyone's help.

If you want another good tip, wait for an overcast day to shoot the falls. The light will be much better for the long exposure! I've tried this on sunny days, and the lighting is too harsh and a bit bright for those long exposures.

Hello,
I am a relative newbie and am taking a class this weekend on taking photos of waterfalls and I know I need to get a circular polarizer for my 10-22 lens. Any suggestions on which one I could get that won't break the bank, but not be total garbage? I understand that you get what you pay for, but budget is an issue at this time.

Thank you for any suggestions,
Molly

if you get a filter, get one you want. don't buy one for now and upgrade later. it's not going to hold much resale value, unfortunately.

I haven't tried it, but I've read that using a CPL with the 10-22 can produce some uneven results in the wide end. I just decided to skip the CPL all together with this lens. So far, I haven't had any regrets.

that doesn't really apply in this case, because she's not shooting the sky. you'd notice some banding if you were shooting a landscape with a lot of sky.

ND filters are typically what you'd want for waterfalls. CPL can help out depending on your angle...reflections off the water and possibly off some wet rocks, etc.

Thanks again, my class is this weekend- so I have no control over the weather- but will remember to go on an overcast day in the future.

Would this be one that you would recommend?

That would be a good place to start. You will need a tripod, and may still need to stop way down and use your lowest ISO as well.

Everyone here loves to help beginners, but I think most of them forget what it is really like to be a beginner.

First you said you KNOW you need a Circular Polarizer. Now you have been convinced to get a $100 Neutral Density filter. Why spend $100 for a filter you may never use again? I bet you still don't even know what a Neutral Density filter does..... or what it is used for....

Did someone tell you that you MUST have a filter to shoot a waterfall?

Are you bringing a tripod? A Neutral Density will be completely useless to you unless you use a tripod and know WHY you need to use a tripod.

I don't think you should use a filter at all. You are still a beginner. Don't over complicate things.

Which is kind of what I was trying to convey in my original post.
Another option would be to maybe see if you can get by with borrowing a filter for a short while from someone in the class.
