Ok gang so here's yet ANOTHER question about filters. I've been doing some research and searching this board for some answers to no avail and had a couple of questions. First a little about me. I am an avid newbie trying to learn as much as possible about photography and to apply these skills to my new T1I starter kit. Currently I have no add on extras but am looking at trying to get started with some filters. Cost is a huge factor now as I am unemployed. However, don't really want to get something shotty that will end up being garbage either. I am looking for a compromise. First off, let me ask about Hoya filters. They seem like they are one of the big "players" in filters. Now, I realize BW and Heliopan are vastly superior to most other filters on the market but as i said, I cannot afford 99$ for a multi coated BW filter.
What is the BIGGEST difference between multi coating and non coating? What are the benefits? As i said I am a newbie and would like to get something to get me off the ground and running without sacrificing terribly in the wallet.
I see that BH Photo has a Hoya starter kit with a UV, CP, and warming filter for 55$ US but realize they are not multi coated.
As a starter kit goes, would anyone recommend this? has anyone actually used this kit or just the non coated Hoya CP?
Question #2- What is the difference between Tiffen and Hoya, if any? Does one produce better quality filters then the other?

Thanks for all the help!! This board is great!

PS one last thing while I am thinking. Doe anyone use threaded ND filters or mainly the square/rectangular ones?

Did you read the Protective Filter FAQ? Uncoated or single coated filters will transmit a significantly lower percentage of the total light (93% vs. over 99%), and what's not transmitted is reflected and will show up in your images as flare or reduced contrast.

Tiffen's filters in general aren't as good as Hoya's S-HMC or HD filters, or B+W MRC or Heliopan SH-PMC.
