I'm new, I know, and I'm certain this question has been asked in various forms many times before. If there's a thread that addresses this particular question pretty much verbatim, please point me towards it.

I shoot all kinds of things, with 50% of the shots being motorsports (specifically motorcycle racing), and the other 50% being nature and some portrait work. I'd like to add a little more portrait work to the mix. Not a lot, but a little.

I currently shoot a 40D, and I have a couple L lenses, but they are all zooms (70-200 f/2.8 and 300 f/4; I have only a couple smaller lenses, but am adding an 85 1.8 to the fray soon. It's not an L, but it's a good lens, as you guys know.) Lately I've considered moving to a 7D because of the advanced AF system and other features the camera has that my 40D doesn't. But, that said, the 5D captures my attention, too.

I know the 5D is a full frame camera, but does that matter with the kinds of shots I take? Other than that, why should I consider it for the kind of shots I take? (Note: I don't know much about a 5Dc or a Mk II or any other 5D variant, so clue me in, please.)

I love Canon!

I think youd benefit more with a 7D

I think you would be okay sticking with the 40D actually...

But the 5D ff would benefit your nature and portrait work. The 7D would benefit the motorsports.

So obviously you should get both.

I love these types of answers! :) I certainly don't think you can go wrong with either camera. I love my 7d it is an awesome camera. I have seen on other posts where people suggest renting the camera if you are unsure of which to buy.

I have the 7D. I just love it. It is such an all around great camera. I shoot baseball and it just slays. 8fps and keeper after keeper after keeper. I have shot several model sessions and it worked great for that as well. One caveat. In a model shoot you can control the lighting so that's never an issue. One place where the 5D would have a clear advantage... wedding photography. Low light shooting is the 5D's forte. I have said before... If I could have ONLY one or the other.... I'd stick with the 7D. But, that's me.

For what you do I would go for the 7D.

Based on what you wrote, sounds like the 7D is the right cam for you.

I did the 7D vs 5D mk2 then i noticed the 1Ds mk2 it sells (used ofcource) at about the 7D's price here in sweden and it has both full frame (16 MP) and 45 point autofocus.
I hope to own one in late June.

I have both a 7D and a 5D mk1, the 7D I use for wild life and sports, the 5D for Landscapes and Portraits.
The 5D is a great camera and I was reluctant to trade it in for a new 7D or the new 5D, I,m glad I made this choice because its still my preference for Landscapes and Portraits over the 7D.
The 7D is a great buy, and is brilliant for wildlife. I normally shoot around 500 ISO and the fine focus point selection is excellent........no more out of focus shots.
If you are on a tight budget I would say go for the 7D, however if you are looking at the possibilty of 2 bodies, I would still buy the 7D (new) and trade in your 40D for a 5D (used)

If you are focussing on 50% motorsport then a 5D or 5D MK II isn't for you.

Yes, it can be used for sports, and people have done so successfully, but if that's 50% of your shooting you'd be better off with a 7D that has an AF system designed for sports.

In OP's situation I would go for either a 7D or look at a used 1DII or something.

Do you remember those old shows where someone would get a ten-minute shopping spree in a store? Can you imagine that in one of those New York stores like Adorama? Oh, the possibilities.

I'd definitely go for a 5dm2, the 7d, and a boatload of big, white lenses. :)

Thank you. bw!
