Hi there!

Not sure if this is the correct forum for this.. How does those client-(password)-protected galleries work? Is that usually offered with the hosting?

This has probably been asked a lot but I can't seem to search for it. If it has been, kindly give me the link.. :)

I am actually just starting the biz.. just have a domain name but website is not done yet, so I'm looking for suggestions for what web host provides this service, etc..

Thanks in advance.

Theresa

It's not a component of the hosting service, it's a component of the gallery software you use. So you need to find a gallery product that supports password protection.

Hosting is basically somebody holding a box for you. It is up to you what you put in the box, and who gets to see what. You do this by choseing the software you want to put in the box that runs your web site. However some "boxes" do not allow certian software. However, almost all paid "boxes" let you run whatever you want. Some software gives you the option you are asking about. Take a good look around you will find many choices, HTML sites, Jumala, Flash, wordpress, etc..etc. all have advantages all have down sides. But you will soon figure out what you want to go with.

you could sign up with zenfolio or smugmug and direct your domain there.

I suggest working with smugmug. As mentioned above you can direct your domain there. For example with me, when someone types in www.ckphotoonline.com (external link) they are sent to my smugmug page. As far as the password protection goes, when you make a gallery all you have to do is select password protect and enter in a password. You can also sell your photos on smugmug.
